Sounds vegan to me, though I'm a fairly new vegan, too. But I don't see why you wouldn't count as vegan. Veganism -- as I understand it -- isn't about being perfect. I don't see how someone could go through life without being responsible for the use and/or killing of animals. After all, what do you do if your local tap water is filtered with animal char? Do you get spring water from hundreds of miles away and pray the trucks that got it to you didn't hit any bugs? There aren't perfect choices in life. You do the best you can with what choices you have.
I don't even see the point of throwing out my old non-vegan items. How does that help anyone? It just leads to more waste when I have to replace the items with something new, waste that will likely lead to more animals being hurt or killed. But, of course, I doing my best to only buy vegan items from now on and support particularly vegan-friendly businesses.
