Recently I've been trying to move away from my usual soy protein shakes and I came across some hemp protein powder at Trader Joe's. Has anyone tried this? What are the benefits over soy protein? Are there any adverse effects? Also, what is good to mix is with?

Thanks.

We don't have TJs here in Canada, but I've used hemp protein often in my smoothies and really like it. Benefits over soy protein could include the lack of phytoestrogens, if that concerns you. I think hemp tastes great on its own as well. If you haven't tried "hemp hearts", they're delicious.

Hemp is also a complete protein, like soy. It's in a lot of the smoothie products I use (Vega), which was designed by vegan triathlete Brendan Brazier.

In considering side effects, I googled "hemp allergy." According to teh intranet, there is no such thing as being allergic to hemp as a food. Some people are allergic to hemp pollen when encountering the living plant, but apparently there aren't any recorded cases of someone being allergic to hemp ingredients. Could this be true? I had never heard that before!

I tried that one before. It was okay. A little bitter tasting to me. Personally, I prefer a rice protein powder that I found, which also has more protein in it.

It does not taste like butt, it has essential fatty acids, and it reduces the weight of your wallet.

I mixed it with soy milk when I used it.

I like Hemp protein. It doesn't disolve well in water which is how I drink it. But I think it would be good in shakes. It's a superfood with omega 3's and other benefits. I think it would be worthwhile to include hemp protein shakes.

I used Hemp Protein for a couple of months but it tastes like dirt (literally) and it only comes in 1-2 lb bags as I've seen. I now use pea protein from Olympian Labs and it tastes great with soy milk. I get it at GNC now and if you go to a "Competition store" it's about 75% off and if you have a gold card you can get another 20% off. I end up getting a kilogram for $19.79 With 12 oz of soy milk you get 35.5g of protein per shake, it depends on how much soy milk you use but I take 2-3 scoops a day and I'm set as far as protein is concerned.

I use a soy protein from time to time. According to the package the phytoestrogens are filtered out. For what it's worth...

Any brands you guys recommend? I love chocolate soy milk, so maybe a chocolate hemp protein powder/hemp milk would be nice, haha.

Hmm I've actually been very curious about hemp protein, just to add it to my repertoire of vegan milks and protein sources, buuuut I kinda want to sample it before I actually buy some as to avoid the potential of wasting my money on something that tastes like...well, butt haha. Any actual descriptions of the taste?

It tastes like dirt. Seriously. Cover it up with the sugar from fruit juice and you're fine though.

Just tried hemp protein for the first time. Was slightly bitter but felt good in my tummy.
Didn't taste like ass !
