Did I mention I bought 4+ pounds of bananas for 3 cents a pound a couple weeks ago? And we ate them ALL. Woohoo, bananas!

Is it true that if you eat a bunch of bananas and then drink pop, you'll get sick? I know...stupid question, but this is the banana thread. I had to make some type of contribution.

Woo! Bananas!

All right, you guys have convinced me. I am going bananas.

Er. I mean:

Unless the banana is overly ripe.

Anyway, this is an important issue and I'm glad to see it being tackled here on VB.

Cheers!

Overly ripe bananas have an important place in our cuisine, and that is in the form of banana bread! So don't knock 'em.

Bananas are "ok." Eating too many can easily make me sick, and give me a headache. I could easily eat 4 grapefruits, 8 oranges, 3 mangos, a whole canteloupe, or a whole full-size papaya -- but 3 bananas make me feel ill. I think it is the high sulfer content. I like a few slices of banana in my fruit salad -- 2/3 of a banana maybe. That sounds like an ideal amount. Any more, and I feel ill.

A small amount to flavor breads, cakes, etcetera, is good. Large amount -- not good.

I like frozen banana deserts, flavored with other fruits, and with nut butter (NOT peanuts). Frozen bananas make me slightly less sick than fresh.

Here's my favorite banana recipe is banana ice cream (it's all raw too!)

Banana Ice Cream:

2 frozen bananas

a few handfuls of fresh or frozen berries or cherries (pitted)

1 Tablespoon raw almond butter

1 teaspoon vanilla

In your food processor, process the following ingredients until the texture is like soft serve ice cream. It takes a few minutes, so be patient. It will process faster if you kind of push the ingredients down with a scraper while the processor is running (just make sure you don't chop up the scraper! Plastic doesn't taste very good in the ice cream!)

Note: You can substitute carob or cocoa powder for the berries or try different kinds of nut butters for different flavors. Chocolate peanut butter banana ice cream is a delicious combo.

Yes, We Have No Bananas!

Folk Song written By: Frank Silver and Irving Cohn (1923)

There's a fruit store on our street

It's run by a Greek.

And he keeps good things to eat

But you should hear him speak!

When you ask him anything, he never answers "no".

He just "yes"es you to death,

And as he takes your dough, he tells you...

"Yes! We have no bananas

We have no bananas today!!

We have string beans and onions, cabBAges and scallions

And all kinds of fruit and say

We have an old fashioned toMAHto

A Long Island poTAHto, but

Yes! We have no bananas

We have no bananas today!"

Business got so good for him that he wrote home today,

"Send me Pete and Nick and Jim; I need help right away."

When he got them in the store, there was fun, you bet.

Someone asked for "sparrow grass"

and then the whole quartet

All answered:

"Yes, we have no bananas

We have-a no bananas today.

Just try those coconuts

Those wall-nuts and doughnuts

There ain't many nuts like they.

We'll sell you two kinds of red herring,

Dark brown, and ball-bearing.

But yes, we have no bananas

We have no bananas today."

The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)

Day-o, Day-o

Daylight come and me want go home

Day, me say day, me say day, me say day, me say day, me say day-o

Daylight come, and me want go . . .

Work all night on a drink of rum!

(Daylight come and me want go home)

Stack banana 'till the morning come!

(Daylight come and me want go home)

Come Mr. Tally Man, tally me banana

(Daylight come and me want go home)

Come Mr. Tally Man, tally me banana

(Daylight come and me want go home)

Lift 6 foot, 7 foot, 8 foot bunch!

(Daylight come and me want go home)

6 foot, 7 foot, 8 foot bunch!

(Daylight come and me want go home)

Day, me say day-o

(Daylight come and me want go home)

Day, me say day, me say day, me say day, me say day, me say day-o

(Daylight come and me want go home)

A beautiful bunch of ripe banana!

(Daylight come and me want go home)

Hide the deadly black tarantula!

(Daylight come and me want go home)

Lift 6 foot, 7 foot, 8 foot bunch!

(Daylight come and me want go home)

6 foot, 7 foot, 8 foot bunch!

(Daylight come and me want go home)

Day, me say day-o

(Daylight come and me want go home)

Day, me say day, me say day, me say day, me say day, me say day-o

(Daylight come and me want go home)

Come Mr. Tally Man, tally me banana

(Daylight come and me want go home)

Come Mr. Tally Man, tally me banana

(Daylight come and me want go home)

Day-o, Day-o

Daylight come and me want go home

Day, me say day, me say day, me say day, me say day, me say day-o

Bananas are my favorite fruit, and taste even better when organic! I eat one for breakfast almost every day. I also love them because they remind me of my favorite passtime...

I like bananas, but I have a very limited window for when I'll eat them as-is. They have to be just barely ripe, on the verge of still being green. Once they start getting spots, they're not suited for anything but banana bread.

I always forget how much I like bananas... we always have bananas at work and I can eat all I want, but i forget... mostly cuz we always have the Williams Bananas (the kind you guys get in the supermarket). But what I really love is apple bananas. You can only get them in Hawaii. they're short and plump, and much firmer than regular bananas. and they taste AMAZING. the flavor is crisp, sweet, and just a hint of tartness... apple bananas RULE!!

I'll take your bananas with spots. To me, if they don't have spots yet, they're still underripe. I don't like that green taste. Once they start getting bigger brown bits on them is when they're too far gone for me.
