Electric Eel

An electric eel is not a true eel. It is more closely related to the catfish family rather than anything else. Anyway, here's a video of an electric eel leaping out of the water and shocking an imitation of a human arm rigged with LED lights. It also shows an electric eel doing the same thing to an imitation of a predator rigged with LEDs.

I love Hope For Paws. I subscribe and regularly send them $5.

I love to see the happy endings. But there is an underlying futility in all their hard work. Recently LA estimated there were something like 1 million homeless dogs on the streets of LA. And they couldn't even begin to guess the number of cats.

Although saving a dog and getting it a good home is always a good thing, I can't help but wonder if this is like trying to fill in the ocean by throwing pebbles.

Very true. The homeless pet problem won't be solved until domestic dogs and cats are spayed/neutered at a high percent. Hope For Paws, along with the many other good animal rescue groups, urges people to spay/neuter their pets.

In California, the homeless pet problem has recently improved greatly. In October 2017, it became California law that pet stores can only sell rescued dogs and cats: http://www.foxnews.com/lifestyle/201...mals-only.html . And, shortly following in January 2018, LA city animal shelters' euthanasia rate fell to below 10% for dogs - that is, over 90% of dogs admitted to LA city animal shelters were given new homes. The LA city animal shelter euthanasia rate for cats fell to below 20%: http://www.foxnews.com/lifestyle/201...mals-only.html .

Some of that "improvement" is misleading. For instance that 90% result is partly because they routinely kill only 10% of the shelter's population. And it is not uncommon for a shelter to turn away a dog it does not think is adoptable. Some dogs remain in the shelter for years waiting to be adopted. And in my county, cats that are brought to the shelter are routinely vaccinated, neutered or spayed, and then released back into the neighborhood that they were found.

All the shelters in California are overcrowded. In fact, it seems that this is the case in most cities especially the ones in milder climates. Frosty cities don't seem to have as many dogs and cats. Recently LA has been exporting "excess" dogs to shelters in Portland and Seatle where the dogs seem to be wanted.

Correction: "Killdeer" should be spelled with a double "l." I misspelled it in the post's title.
