In about two months, I will be sixty years old. The last several years, I began to think about the fact that meat is murder, and that compassionate people could only continue to consume it if they saw it as a product minus the reality.

So, about two years ago I eliminated mammal meat, and then I said good-bye to bird meat, and a few weeks ago I stopped eating seafood. Even eating a tiny shrimp is participating in murder.

At this point I'm struggling with the idea of eating dairy products and free-range eggs. Dairy and eggs might not be the bodies of animals, but animals are killed in the process of providing dairy and eggs for public consumption. Time will tell, but I think I may end becoming a vegan.

A few years ago, that idea would have seemed ridiculous.

Am I the only relatively old person following this path? Are most of you in your 20's or 30's?

That's so cool, and motivational. I was 38 when I started.

Btw., agree with the "a few years ago.. idea would have seemed ridiculous" thought. Same here. My biggest challenge in speaking with people about it is to put them into a receptive state of mind. Everything else follows and at least plants a seed.

Welcome to veggieboards. Congratulations on turning veggie. I followed the path you embarked on when I was forty some ten years ago, so I guess I am one of the relatively old people who use this site.

Well, DH and I are not new veggies, having stopped eating meat at around age 30. But we are 48 and 50 now, so we are close in age, anyway. And I know folks in their late 60's who are vegan.

To the OP: Welcome to VB! You're not old, just a little ripe.

I went veg at 38, and now I'm approaching my 50th birthday. I'm actually glad to see an "older" member here; many members ARE in their 20's and 30's, but we all learn from each other. It's a wonderful experience being part of this board.

49. I went vegan at 45. I am thrilled that I made this choice, and truthfully can't imagine my life any other way. Welcome to VB!

That's awesome to see older folks on here. It's nice to see actual ages of folks on here. I'm 37 but have been vegan for 15 years. I feel like such an outcast on this thread!

Welcome to the boards!

I am not old, but I think it's pretty awesome you are making this decision. I for one think it's never too late to change.

Here's to many more vegetarian (vegan!) years!

Awww this thread make me so happy.

I'm not old (30 in July) but I certainly can feel old when it seems that most veg*ns are teenagers.

I became veg at 50, and will be celebrating three years next month. I can't speak for the others, but for me,becoming vegan just happened naturally as I learned more and more about the egg and dairy industry.

Welcome to the boards, and congratulations on changing to a new way of living. You'll find it to be one of the best decisions you've ever made.

My father in law and my mother in law went vegetarian more than 30 years ago, they are now 93 and 89 years old.

My usual answer: I have never heard a convincing reason to eat meat.

I went veg at 16, but if I'm not still making positive changes in my life when I'm 60+, I will be very disappointed in myself. Welcome to VB!

Thanks for the supportive replies.

I'm still eating a vegetarian diet, and I feel good about it.

I suspect I will make a move not too long down the road to a vegan diet.

It's the final step in the process, and I don't want to stop short of my goal of not exploiting animals in feeding my body.

Vegetarian at 35, went Vegan at 43 - 44 and still going strong!

What's great about this site (IMHO) is that veggies of all ages and from many nations can come together to share ideas and support each other.

I am only nineteen, and have been a vegan since I was fourteen, but my dad is really getting into it now. In fact, he hasn't had a single meat product for... Five months. A really big victory for him. He's fifty, by the way so I don't know if that counts as older, but its completely new to him, and he's loving it so far.
