I'm looking for YOUR best kale chips/crisps/whatever recipe, using an oven or whatnot (because I lack a dehydrator)!

silva 04-30-2012 02:35 PM

I preheat to 375 F. tear kale in pieces, spray with olive oil, and just sea salt and pepper. About 10 min. toss a bit and another 5 min

Clueless Git 04-30-2012 02:40 PM

Oooh! Oooh!

I bought some of these from some health food shop in London - Fackin' Crackin' they were!

I do what silva said. Sometimes I sprinkle on a bit of paprika.

I've never tried the dehydrator. I like the oven because they brown.

I would really like to try kale chips. But they seem too expensive at the store, and I'm too lazy to make them myself. How can I resolve this problem?

Envy 04-30-2012 05:30 PM

I have no clue to be honest as I suffer from the same problem.

Irizary 04-30-2012 05:47 PM

It's really hard.

Irizary 04-30-2012 05:52 PM

I'm stressed!

I hope that by sitting here, some day, some way, someone will come along and do it for me.

I am going to try making these today (:

Yes! This is how life should work.

My fiance likes to shower me with food so he buys me Brad's raw leafy kale!
It is pretty pricey, but SO good and cheesey flavored. (vegan)
My favorite flavors are nasty hot and vampire killer!

Maybe you can sucker someone into buying them for you ? =P ahaha

I wasn't wild about Brad's kale chips, but I'm not a big nooch fan. I did like the beet chips, though. Yum!

I do the same but add some garlic and onion powder.

Omg, the chips taste vile. Im talking about the LEAFY KALE lol. My fiancé bought me both the kale and sundried tomato chips I was so excited, but I couldn't even finish the bag. They were so gross! Yuck!

I've only made kale chips twice now. The first batch, yesterday, I used sesame oil and nutritional yeast and kosher salt. They tasted great, but the house smelled fishy while they were in the oven. Today I used olive oil, lemon juice and sesame seeds along with the nutritional yeast and salt. Liked it, will finish them, but something's missing. My daughter just texted me that she likes to put onion powder in the mix, which I'll do next time. Maybe garlic powder too, maybe sprinkle the onion powder and garlic powder on as a last step once they're arranged onto the cookie sheet. I also mean to use Silva's idea of higher heat and shorter cooking time. I've been at 250 degrees for fifty minutes, and would much rather ten.

I've been using pre-chopped kale, which I won't do again. Next time I buy kale I'll get it by the bunch and tear down the big leaves into good-sized pieces. Easier than pawing through the whole bag looking for pieces big enough to use. I had to make a bean/vegetable soup today to use up the rejects.

I wonder if kale is still a superfood once you make it oily and salty and dry it all out. I hope so.
