vegan tapioca

I've followed a couple of recipes for this verbatim and both times came out too thin, and too sweet.
My rules-

1/2 cup small pearl tapioca
1 cup total non dairy milk-(3/4 to cook;1/4 add 2 teaspoons tapioca starch or corn starch)
1/3 sugar (more if using unsweetened milk-to taste)

1/2 cup small pearl tapioca covered in lots of water. I had them in a 2 cup container full of water. Soak overnight
Drain water.
Add pearls to pot and stir in 3/4 cup soy or almond milk. I used almond milk that was sweetened so I only added a scant 1/3 cup sugar. If using unsweetened milk I'd add sugar (or syrup) to it until sweet as you'd like
stir and cook over medium heat till simmering then low. Stir pretty constantly for about 15 minute. You want all the pearls translucent.
Add 2 teaspoons starch (I used tapioca- corn is fine) to 1/4 cup remaining cold milk. stir in the last minute or two.
Scrape sides of pot, cover and chill

I always liked that weird sticky tapioca pudding. I think my grandmother may have made it like this- I don't remember any eggs at least.

I plan on having it with some mango!
