What the what now? 01-13-2011 02:10 PM

Sorry if anyone else posted this, but I was intrigued when I saw this post. I live in a rural area so we don't really have many vegetarian or vegan ready made foods (or stores that sell them), so specialty stuff like vegan ice cream isn't available. This is an ice cream made from frozen bananas! I think I'm going to give this a try with a scoop or two of peanut butter.

This looks good. I might add some chocolate syrup, walnuts and a strawberry.

iceflower 02-04-2011 10:57 PM

Looks great.. I think it would be good with some caramel on top.

PiSis 02-04-2011 11:01 PM

whoa, that sounds awesome!
will give it a whirl and report back.

Rhys 02-04-2011 11:16 PM

Hellz yeah, I make this all the time with cocoa powder.

LilBigBug 02-04-2011 11:25 PM

I wonder if it would work with another fruit?

iceflower 02-04-2011 11:32 PM

There is a recipe there for avocado as well, but it uses more ingredients.
Someone on the page suggested serving it in citrus bowls:

I think this is a fantastic idea.. I can't wait to run to the store and buy some bananas and oranges!

koshermama 02-08-2011 10:26 PM

oh man...now i wish i had picked up bananas today at the store

MikeLines 02-08-2011 10:40 PM

I'm trying this this weekend after I go to the store

It will work with mangos. I puree, then freeze in cups, then let them thaw out a bit before serving. Tastes like sorbet.

I like the sound of Peanutbutter Banana icecream. Maybe once I get the hang of making it, maple syrup banana icecream. yumyum.

Does anyone know if this will work with a handheld electric blender/blitzer?

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

Don't see why it wouldn't.

I hope so. My 'narnas are freezing as we type.

I want to try that too, but can't afford to buy anything bigger than a handblender. So please inform me on how it turned out!

GhostUser 02-16-2011 12:01 PM

The plain bananas are really good this way but if you add a little almond butter, cocoa powder, agave syrup and a splash of coconut or almond milk, it's spectacular. Add just enough of the liquid to make it the consistency of soft serve.

AlainWinthrope 02-16-2011 12:51 PM

I've made this before. It's pretty good.

Yes it works. I put clingfilm over bowl and cut a hole for the blender incase of any bits trying to escape. Its a bit if work to get it all blended, but worth it. YUM!

Kjesta 02-19-2011 10:03 AM

Another motivation for me to like bananas! I might try this one tomorrow

cupcakekat 04-03-2011 09:39 PM

I've made this tons of times and love it! It tastes great with cocoa powder

ebonyvegetarian 05-30-2011 09:35 AM

ill have to try it. whats agave? should i just use sugar?

penny79 05-30-2011 09:38 AM

It's called a banana whip and doesn't need sweetener as long as you use ripe bananas.

ocrob37 06-21-2015 09:53 AM

I always have frozen bananas in the freezer. They are so good in smoothies. I recently saw a great looking recipe for vegan banana bread as well.

ZoroAdams 01-31-2016 08:19 AM

Looks great. But I would add some caramel or chocolate on it.

Sheila Burz 02-03-2016 08:43 AM

Hi ) looks good ) you can add some fruits to it and that'll be very delicious ) there's also some receipts in the Internet ice-creame made of cashew) wish you good luck in you experiments!

veganziggy 03-24-2016 01:12 PM

I seriously recommend peeling and chopping the bananas first as it can be a bit of a battle to do this when frozen. Also i found that overly ripe bananas work best

Yes lol! I fought with an unpeeled frozen banana one time, and wish someone had videoed it. Slippery frozen banana, and me hacking away with different implements. :D

Now, I peel and cut it up, freeze the pieces on a cookie sheet, then bag 'em up and put back in the freezer. They don't stick together that way. :)

Naturebound 03-25-2016 02:56 AM

I always keep a freezer bag of banana slices on hand. I like to use them not only for banana ice cream, but smoothies and sometimes I just eat them frozen (slightly thawed) as is with a glass of almond milk.

Rebeka 01-08-2017 10:48 AM

It also works to just freeze a peeled banana! Good with peanut butter.
