I just made this cake a few hours ago and it is the best chocolate cake I've ever put in my mouth. I even used the two extra spoons of chocolate as suggested. Now I'm getting myself addicted to chocolate cake.

LOL!

I never taste the vinegar, and I've made cakes using more than this! I just use the ol' all purpose white vinegar.

The difference in self rising flour I had to look up:

For each cup of all-purpose flour, add 1 1/4 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.

That wouldn't rise as much as using the soda/vinegar, but I have seen cakes like that.

Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good

I know this is an old question but still my answer is YES! Its all I use and it comes out great! I just add 1 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp salt to the mix.

Chocolate cake never goes out of style. Any other food is just "the new chocolate cake" like the new black.

I have made this recipe too, and now am going to make it again!

The discussion about the purpose of the vinegar reminded me of when my grandmother talked about cooking during WWII. When rationing was in full force, and eggs in short supply, she would substitute one of the two eggs in a cake recipe with a tablespoon of vinegar. Must be the only context where vinegar could fill the role of egg!

The vinegar reacts with the baking soda which is why it's so important to have the pan greased, and the oven preheated before mixing the dry with the wet.

The last time I made this I doubled the dry ingredients and put half in a ziploc bag with wet ingredient measurements.Made it very to make the next time! Also a great gift in a nice jar.
Now I want cake....
