"Obesity: It’s Not About the Carbs"

I see people demonizing carbs while eating really unhealthy foods a lot, one guy I know is on a low carb diet and considers pork rinds a healthy snack. This is a refreshing take! |
Yep. People say that donuts are unhealthy because of the (processed) carbs, but added fat is equally the culprit.
A "Dunkin Donuts" glazed donut gets about 1/2 of its calories from fat, and about 1/2 of its calories from carbohydrates : http://www.calorieking.com/foods/cal...kPTU2MzQx.html . |
Very strange that people avoid fruit in their attempts to lose weight. A medium peach is only 60 calories! https://www.google.com/search?source...k1.j4_-dw0XiSI

Yeah its quite strange. I have seen diabetic people order bunless double cheese burgers and deep fried onion rings instead of fries because, " The carbs are unhealthy", like seriously this is getting out of hand. People are posting everywhere now that you can eat unlimited amounts of fat and cholesterol as long as you avoid carbohydrate, that sugar and carbs in any form are what really causes heart disease, and that low fat is just a conspiracy theory because the low fat trend has not cured the obesity epidemic.
LOL its not the low fat foods fault. IF YOU REPLACE FATTY JUNK FOOD WITH SUGAR FILLED JUNK FOOD OF COURSE YOUR NOT GOING TO LOSE ANY WEIGHT!!!! Its all about calories restriction. Which people usually fail to do. You can easily lose weight on a vodka, MC Donald's, candy and cigarette diet as long as you calorie count lol. But weight loss is not the point. We want people to be healthy for corns sake. |

Yes, it's completely insane. The American Diabetes Association directly discourages people from eating saturated-fat-rich foods, like the fatty meats, cheeses etc: http://www.diabetes.org/food-and-fit...-diabetes.html . People with diabetes aren't even properly informed about the recommendations of reputable organizations that fight diabetes! Low-carb is so entrenched in the online diabetes community. |
Hi there
What you're tryng to do isn't easy, but you have to trust yourself ! I'm sure it gonna work well ! Good luck ! Regards, |
There's nothing wrong with a high fat diet either. In fact, people who eat low fat alternatives usually gain weight, while people who've struggled with their weight their whole life has lost it on high fat diets.

Please substantiate this with citations of peer-reviewed studies. . |

I'm not allowed to post links, that's why I didn't in my initial post. But the info is widely available, it's just a simple google search away. A ton of studies support the fact that eating higher amounts of fat on a plant based diet reduces weight. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Hi twistedbydesign! I apologize for not saying hello before jumping right into the conversation. It's true that certain diet proponents, including some physicians, claim that high-fat diets are effective for weight loss, and that low-fat diets cause weight gain. However, the peer-reviewed nutrition literature doesn't support this claim. Here are relevant peer-reviewed studies, from the reputable American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the New England Journal of Medicine. These reputable journals are neither pro-vegetarian nor anti-vegetarian. Only one of the below-linked studies showed that higher-fat diets are more effective for weight loss than are low-fat diets - the other studies showed equivalent results from either diet. From the February 1996 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/63/2/174.abstract From the May 2004 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/79....full.pdf+html From the October 2006 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/84....full.pdf+html From the October 2009 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2763382/ From the January 2012 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition: http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/95....full.pdf+html From the September 2014 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...rticle/1900510 Please forgive me for jumping into this topic so abruptly. Here's the concern: We need to be careful about misrepresenting low-fat, carbohydrate-rich whole foods, because these foods are strongly recommended by all mainstream vegetarian and vegan organizations, and by all mainstream health organizations. Beans, lentils, sweet potatoes, whole grains, and whole fruit - all of which are low in fat - are strongly recommended by all of these groups. https://www.vegansociety.com/resourc...ition-overview https://www.vegsoc.org/eatwellplate https://recipes.heart.org/Articles/1...ns-and-Legumes http://www.diabetes.org/food-and-fit...uperfoods.html https://www.cancer.org/cancer/cancer...endations.html |
First, I am 5'7" and 128 lbs. I have been a vegetarian for 28 years. A relative by marriage who is obese found out I was vegetarian and said, "I have to have my meat and I have to avoid carbs." I said, "How is that working out for you?"

I've seen a couple human clinical trials that purported to show that 'low fat' diets do not help with weight loss. In all cases I downloaded the full text and what really happened was they had people, for example, go from 40% calories from fat to 35% calories from fat for 3 weeks  [I didnt keep the references because those junk science studies were only good for a laugh] A low fat diet gets 8-12% of its calories from fat. I make absolutely no attempt to eat low-fat. I just cook vegan food from scratch with no refined ingredients and my stats show me getting 10-12% calories from fat, so its not 'extreme' or anything.
