Hello
I just posted in general health about recent bouts of waking up sweating and feeling ill and was thinking about soy and dairy and my dietary changes recently and am wondering whether the fact that I had no period for about 4 months then brought back dairy for a week and voila, period again, is coincidence? My weight is low but didn't change when the dairy came back. Is this something I should be avoiding? Does this happen to anybody else?
I've read about it changing hormone levels and avoiding dairy or drinking soy ( could be either really ) completely clears up my acne, but I did think all the stuff around cycles was hype or that at most, it would delay it a bit.
I have no other problem with soy , no digestive issues or anything.

That is very strange, I've never heard of that happening...I think an important question is what age you are? This could have a significant impact on your periods. Also, if my period was missing for that long, I would definitely see a doctor. Don't need to end up on "I didn't know I was pregnant"

Thanks Limes. I'm 27. I went to a doctor around the 3rd month and he said he had no idea but that he felt dietary changes couldn't do that and maybe a little more weight would help ( even though I was the same weight as when I was having periods ). I figured this was wise yet before I'd even managed to gain any, period returned when dairy did. Since then have gained maybe a kilo but now all this other stuff has started happening and when I keep dairy I get weird hormonal cystic acne that I never even got as a kid. Sigh.

periods stop for many reasons, the most common reason is not eating enough calories.

im just guessing but it makes sense to me that you got your period after eating dairy again because dairy was providing you with more calories than you were eating when you were missing your period. dairy products are more calorie dense so maybe you started meeting your RDA because you were consuming more calories not directly bc of the dairy.

what does a regular days meals look like for you? have you ever tried tracking your calorie intake or keeping a food diary?

I have as of the last few days. Dairy actually causes me to eat FEWER calories ( which was another reason I initially gave it up) as I find it a more filling protein option than nuts etc.
I weight 45kg and am 164 tall ( I have a chest and such and weight is evenly distributed etc so do question the bmi system ) , in tracking my calories I've found I eat about 2000 or 2100 calories a day with about 55 grams of protein and 50 grams of fat ( or so my last few days have suggested. I walk about an hour a day but other than that don't really exercise at the moment.

I've been consuming loads of soy in various forms (milk, in veggie meats, other soy replacement products) for years and my periods are still going strong lol

I've heard that your reaction to soy can also depend on your body. While some people claim they've done poorly on soy, others say they have thrived. So I guess it really does come down to your body and your genes.

Agreed how you react to soy really does depend on your body. I had very light periods when I first went vegan and was consuming 2-3 servings of soy per day. Since I cut down on soy my period's returned to normal.

There are links with soy to infertility and so one could make a logical link yo hormones and periods. Its been tested on mice but not sure about humans. (source: infertility diet). Agree it sounds like you may not have been eating enough replacements when you took it from your diet.
