Is there any "live" blood in the discharge from your period? I know that the endometrial lining sloughs off basically because the arteries in the uterus constrict and cut off nutrient supplies, so the lining dies. But is there any possibility of viable blood also being leaked?

From what I have learned there is. You are right in saying as the blood vessels constrict, the lining dies and sloughs off; however, I believe those blood vessels do leak into the discharge.
