So I bought the dress today for my husband's party. It's a black velvet sheath, with a matching long jacket, and a silver chain belt. Very, very pretty. But what kind of shoes do I wear with it? I am completely hopeless when it comes to fashion. I have a pair of black slingbacks, with a pointy toe, but I don't know if those will go.

If you're not crazy about the slingbacks, you might consider something strappy and sexy. BTW: I LOVE velvet!

I second the strappy heel idea.

I did some searching. I could get some velvet strappy heels, but they are pricey. I'm gonna scope out payless and see what they have. I'd love to get another pair of heels with a nice ankle strap. My old ones bit the dust.

Assuming that I won't wear open toes since it is velvet, what color hose?

Ok. Now I look even more fashion-impaired. Attached is a pic of the outfit. See the pretty silver chain belt. It has a loop thing to hook it up and then the bottom of the chain has like a bar on it. Is the dangling part supposed to go in the front or the back?

Extremely cute dress... I think black strappy heels would look good, or maybe something satin.

How about red heels? Style would be your choice... but add a little red clutch with them and pick the colour up a bit in your makeup, and you'd be all set. Black shoes would go, but I don't know that they'd make much impact.

Payless has some great holiday shoes..I think these are pretty. You could probably catch them on sale. This is cute too. This is the ultimate sexy. Oh this is cute too! This one would match nicely. You've just got to get yourself over there.

I think I will head over. I like the closed toes ones with the rhinestones. Hmmm... on the red. I can't really pull of red lipstick though?

Your shoes sound like a great choice..as long as they are girlie with a heal!

hint:Jazz up an old pair of black heel by cutting of the straps, and buying think black satin ribbon, wrap it under the heal and cross on top of your foot and tie a bow at the back of your heal.Absolutley gorgeous! I just did this with a pair of pink pumps w/ pink ribbon..and the compliments never stopped!

Combat boots or Converse are always the answer in any fashion dillema!

Sure you can. You probably just haven't found the right shade. Go to a makeup counter @ a dept store and ask for a muted red lipstick that matches your skin tone. I prefer MAC myself, but I know that it does contain carmine so...

I think every woman needs a pair of red shoes.

<<< currently red-shoe-less

OH and dare I say... It's probably a good thing I don't live near any of the shoe hussies. I'd have to declare bankruptcy. Ruthie, all those shoes are cute. I love your style!

LOL, I was thinking black velvet healed boots (that just keep going up), but perhaps that is a bit much. I'm helpless with this sort of thing as well. If it doesn't go with my fake Birk shoe look, it's just too damn bad. Oh....I do have some 'witchy' shoes. Not a boot, but a full black dress shoe with a clunky heal and a silver buckle. I always feel witchy/sexy when wearing them...perhaps something like that. To me strappy is too much.

Red lipstick is the only kind of red I look good in

Yeah, if you go to a makeup counter of some sort they probably know what would look best in you.

No no NO!

Such a girlie outfit needs seriously girlie shoes. I LOVE Ruthie's choices. The first ones (with the rhinestones) are gorgeous.

Absolutely. But no stockings, obviously : )

You're going to look fab. I hope we get to see a pic of the end result?!

LOL! I knew I liked you! I think it was the sock monkey thing that really hooked me. I used to wear converse a lot, with everything, but my feet need more support now, and I have been getting more girlified as I get older.

Really though, I like the second pair Ruthie posted. I don't think Rincaro seems like a combat boot/converse with a dress kind of girl. I think she is more girly-girl and sophisticated than I will ever be.

Sure. Rule of thumb is no open toes in the winter, unless it's a holiday party (at least this is what I've always thought).

And, you may want to try a berry red shade (blue based) rather than a true red or an orange red. I can't pull off reds either unless they are a berry shade. Warm wine shadow brushed at your lash line with the tip of an applicator followed by wine liner will give your eyes a smokey look. Make sure to curl those lashes and your in there. If you wear shadow, and you go for the smokey wine liner look, keep the shadow applications like. Maybe just a little shimmery pink brushed over the lid.

ETA: If you go open toe I agree to not wear stockings. Check this out . It's Sally Hansen's spray on legs. Find it at the drug store...it's really not that expensive. I haven't really used it so I can't give an opinion.

I'd say yes... I mean... strappy sandals would show your toes.

Whenever people talk about clothes I always think of that scene from Serial Mom, when the blond juror pleads with Kathleen Turner.

KT: You can't wear white shoes after labor day.

Juror: But fashion has changed.

KT: No. It hasn't. (whacks her on the head with the phone)

Anyway... fashion HAS changed. It's all about what YOU think looks hot!

^^^Absolutely. And whatever you are comfortable wearing. If you feel good about what you're wearing, it will show.

Well if this weather holds out, it will still be pretty warm here in three weeks or so. Yesterday it hit 80 again! So I guess I will keep the sandal option open. Yay! I get to go shoe shopping!

I like Bumble's idea.

Q: How many poets does it take to change a light bulb? A: 1001...one to change the bulb, 1000 to say it's already been done.

I love that scene! (Actually I love the whole movie)

The juror is Patty Hearst.
