Okay. I have read that women burn 100 more calories per day when they are on their period, for whatever reason. That makes sense and would justify a craving for 2 apples or something during my period.

Yet about 1 1/2 weeks before my period, I have a few days where I need about 500 extra calories, and I do mean "need." I feel famished without those extras, and it's not like I'm low on calories, anyway. I make sure I get AT LEAST 1,750 every single day and 95% of the time, I'm at 2,000. So what's the deal? Can anyone explain this phenomenon? Does this happen to others? Am I weird?

Yeah I get like that before, and usually on days 4+. The first couple days I'm so sick and crampy though so food makes me feel like barfing.

Your metabolism speeds up when you ovulate too.

yeah that's probably about the time you'd be ovulating. a lot of women get sugar/chocolate cravings during ovulation i think.

I do the same thing, but during most of my period i'm so sick and crampy i can't eat, so i always assumed that it was because my body knows i'm about to starve it. You ovulate almost exactly 12 days before your period, so that could be it too.

Same thing happens to me. Once I get my period (and for the following week or so) I have zero appetite so I figured it was just building up nutrient stores for this.

I read somewhere (I think in "Breaking the Food Seduction" that chocolate as we know it didn't exist until the 19th century. I wonder what women craved before that?

They were too worried about getting enough calories in any form to worry about cravings.
