Hi everyone!

I'm in serious need of help. I stopped eating red meat roughly a year ago, then stopped all other meat sources as well. I went about 5 months as a vegetarian, and just recently started incorporating some meats into my diet again (really only turkey, everything else still makes me sick).

Within the past month my skin has been TERRIBLE. I figured it was just from the "time of the month" because my skin is always extra sensitive around that week. However I'm breaking out on my face, shoulders, back, chest, literally all over :-( its not a rash, it's just plain old acne. I'm going to see a dermatologist in 2 weeks but I just can't take it anymore and wanted to see if anyone had some ideas. Oh, and I've noticed my skin has been peeling a lot as well. At first I blamed my sunburn, but I haven't been in the sun in over 2 weeks.. so that can't be it.

Background on me: I'm 24, active, take multivitamins everyday, and drink a lot of water. I'm at a loss!!!

Do you eat dairy?

Jbombs 08-27-2012 03:57 PM

I do eat dairy. Not a lot of it, but occasional

even the tiniest bit of dairy will cause me to break out, i also notice red splotches on my face after eating dairy and generally all junk food.

dairy has been connected to acne flare ups, many of us here can attest to the connection as well.

veggieboards is for vegans and vegetarians and those aspiring to be vegan and vegetarian, you risk getting kicked off by talking about eating turkey and other animals.

You have to visit your dermatologist to know what product or medicines you need to take.

Try some good acne lotion probably organic or herbal it will take time but will cure it  for ever.

Hi Jbombs! Sorry to hear you're struggling! I had perfect skin right through my teens and until my mid-twenties and then WHAM- both the surfacey whitehead kind and these awful, hormonal cysts along my jawline!

Obviously not everything works for everyone (and a lot of people also do just get bouts of acne at random times. Though it sounds like there's a connection with what you're eating as a vego for sure) and the above responses are probably better than mine anyway but here's what I personally learned!

-even tiny bits of dairy break me out,
-soy milk actually HELPS my cystic acne, possibly due to a low weight and perhaps lowish estrogen or something ( have you lost or gained weight on your vego diet? That can tip the balance ) BUT there are certain brands of processed soy meats etc that break me out every single time for an unknown reason. Something in them I guess ( or just the fact that they're crap... )
-I stopped using even my organic 100% natural facewash/moisturisers/foundation. All of it. Cold turkey. My skin is a LOT nicer now.
-balanced diet ( vitamins are good but perhaps not the same?)
-no daily cashews. No idea why but those babies also break me out if I munch on them for 2 or 3 days in a row. In a raw cake on occasion etc. it's fine but if I buy a bag and tear through them the way I do with other nuts.... bad news! Omega 6s or something. I have no idea. That's only skin and sometimes I don't mind! Remembering it IS only skin helps ( but if your skin is telling you something is up inside that can be good to listen to :) )

Let us know how you go!!
