So I went to Pets Mart a few weeks ago and I swear I was crying my eyes out!
They had dogs out there that had been saved from a pup mill that the police found.
Here is some info from a sheet of paper I got:
"Recently authortizes seized a puppy mill that was producing over seven different small breeds totaling around 300 dogs! The majority of the dogs were in a very poor environment resulting in numerous health issues varying from toe nails curled around into the paws, matted fur, hair loss, dental damage, heart worms, and some had broken bones.
I was in tears when I read this! I spoke to one of the ladies that worked there and she said that many of the dogs had to be put due to very bad heart worms and some were just so terrified from the whole ordeal that they couldn't have anything to do with a cage, humans, and other dogs. I felt so sad but yet so happy that they found and stopped this place! I hope they can find more and reduce these plants from ever growing!
Ironically, they sell small animals (birds, rodents, ferrets, etc.) raised in conditions very very similar to puppymills. *shakes head*
Hermit crabs in terrible conditions too. And the fish.=/
EDIT: Correction, hermit crabs in terrible condition in every pet smart I've ever visited. Maybe somewhere there's a petsmart selling hermit crabs in a tank that's big enough for them, with deep sand, good food, plenty of water and places for them to hide. But I doubt it.
