Everyone should use the same site to test, to level the playing field.

I got 7.3 mbs down and 13 mbs up, typical during the day, I get a bit faster late at night.

My computer is under repair but this is in the computer lab in my building, same network, and is consistant with what I've measured at home before.

When I lived off campus, and had comcast cable, I got around 2.6 mbs, pretty close to the claimed 3 mbs.

When using Soulseek, people usually get a file off me at 100 + kbps and my download speeds are based on how fast their upstream is. I haven't gotten any files faster than 450 kbps. I do not even know what the advertised speeds are for my ISP, I am just happy that it is $33.00 a month.

Using the same site to test does NOT level the playing field. The speed of down or up load to the test site depends on where you are relative to the test site.

actual distance is negligible, electricity moves pretty fast

there is an east coast server on that site, and several on the west coast, pick the closest one.

Actually.... I find it to be drastically different based on different places:

Location 1:

2005-04-08 02:46:10 EST: 1908 / 157

Your download speed : 1953823 bps, or 1908 kbps.

A 238.5 KB/sec transfer rate.

Your upload speed : 160864 bps, or 157 kbps.

Location 2:

2005-04-08 02:47:14 EST: 2639 / 242

Your download speed : 2703199 bps, or 2639 kbps.

A 329.9 KB/sec transfer rate.

Your upload speed : 248416 bps, or 242 kbps.

Location 97:

2005-04-08 02:48:36 EST: 2669 / 239

Your download speed : 2733341 bps, or 2669 kbps.

A 333.6 KB/sec transfer rate.

Your upload speed : 245655 bps, or 239 kbps.

Location 1 (when said idle):

2005-04-08 02:51:07 EST: 553 / 237

Your download speed : 566491 bps, or 553 kbps.

A 69.1 KB/sec transfer rate.

Your upload speed : 242923 bps, or 237 kbps.

Drastic differences for some... yet all within a small amount of time.

distance is not negligible. congested networks and hops along the way can bring latency into the picture and slow your test considerably. always pick the closest test server to your location.

Interesting. I guess that's pretty slow compared to some here, but compared with dialup it's wonderful.

yeah but doa traceroute between where im at in NJ, to CA and you may go through multiple nodes and stations, were talking fractions of a second but that makes up a lot if you live one circuit down from where this server is in CA and it makes one hop.

My system doesnt run that one right during the upload? anyway, i did a local test in NJ and am at 6116kilobits per second. its fawkin fast all i gotta say, ive had cable internet at 3 houses and this last optima online i have now is by far the fastest. On large sites like microsoft/downloads.com i can easily download a file at 1.2-1.4megabytes per second, multiple downloads can sustain 1.4-1.6megabytes per second. for instance, at work on the garden state network, which is private T3 connections and fiber lines through the state buildings, i get average of 600kb download max when anyones online, when everyone leaves it gets to almost 900k , still plenty slower than my home connection.

Do a traceroute between where you are in NJ and the test server on the site I linked in NY and realize thats closer than my home to Los Angeles and stop whining.
