With the beginning of school fast approaching, a number of states are offering sales tax holidays on certain items that are presumed to be for school use. One of the main items is computers (CPUs and many peripherals as long as purchased with a CPU). In my state a computer includes a laptop and/or a tablet computer. Tax exempt as long as $1500 or less in value. Clothing and school supplies are exempt as long as each item is $100 or less. (Your state may have different rules.)

For a webpage listing the various states (18) that have sales tax holidays, visit:

This page will give you links to webpages explaining the rules in your particular state

Some states have separate sales tax holidays for purchasing things like firearms and ammunition, air conditioners, electric generators, hurricane and emergency preparedness equipment.

(I may buy myself a tablet computer during Tennessee's sales tax holiday, August 2-4.)

I bought myself a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 during the tax holiday. The low price store, Best Buy, had it for $167 before the holiday, then raised it to $179 during the holiday, and now has dropped it back down to $169. The effect of the price increase was to eat up most of the savings that I would have experienced from the holiday had the price remained the same as it was the day before the holiday.

I was going to buy the tablet anyway, but the tax holiday itself did not benefit me much at all.

One piece of good news is that Best Buy (or at least the store where I bought it) is offering free classes on the Android OS, so I hope these will prove beneficial.
