Has anyone ever had a roof top garden? I'm moving to Minnesota in July and the apartment I'll be living in has a doorway to the roof top. I've always thought a roof top garden would be a great place to just be!! What have your experiences with them been?

I havent had a roof top garden, but I have grown plants on a balcony before. Some advice; be sure they are watered more often than other outdoor plants. Being in pots, directly in the sun will try them out rapidly. There has been summer days I have had to water mine more than 4 times a day! Also the recommened plant food every 3 months needs to be more like 1 month depending on the size of the plant/pot. It's easier to use a plant food that can be mixed in water, unstead of changing a "plant food soil" like Miracle grow...it can get messy, plus you might want to go organic unstead.

i've not done it, but have heard:

how high up you'll be will really affect what'll grow- going up a few floors is like shifting up a climate zone weather wise, cos the heat from/in the earth isn't keeping your plants feet toasty.

also be aware of stuff tipping over/blowing over if its in pots- gets windy on rooves- picking them up is gonna get really tiresome and disheartening, and i bet the plants won't like doing headfirst concrete dies either, lol.

sounds very exciting though! i bet some alpine herbs would love it up there. you could maybe do a whole green roof dealeo...... make some grass benches to sit on in the summer, etc.

A lot of work I imagine. Hauling all the dirt etc. up and water too. Check with your apartment manager, maybe you can do a communal garden if the roof meets the specs. for all the extra weight. There are a lot of buildings going green with rooftop gardens.
