Does anyone have experience in growing garlic (especially in cold climates)?

I understand that "hardneck" varieties work best in cold weather, but I'm not sure which kind of hardneck to plant.

I've read that garlic needs "well drained soil". What exactly is well drained soil, and how is it prepared?

Any tips would be appreciated!

Thanks,

Beancounter

Well drained soil just means that it won't do well if you have a lot of clay in your soil--which doesn't allow draining very well. We have garlic growing in our front flowerbed, although we didn't plant it. I'm waiting for the flower tops to dry out so I can dig it up

Here's an excellent forum on gardenweb:

Are you supposed to wait for it to sprout, then bury the whole head? I read that somewhere and tried it, but nothing ever came up.

I think you're supposed to bury each individual clove but I'm not sure. If you do a search on gardenweb, you'll probably find the answer
