How do you meet offline vegan friends?

Hi all,
I have a question for you. How have you found places to socialize with other vegans? I know there are street fairs once or twice a year and some lectures if you're lucky. However, these seem more like isolated social events to me. I like the idea of them, but I am always alone if I do attend.

To me "vegan' holds more than just a food lifestyle. It means calm, centered, understanding that we are of a larger scene. I want to surround myself with people who have these values and traits.

Of course, everyone is different and I'm not stereotyping. I just gravitate more toward my own type

So....where can I find you guys?

Where in the world are you!
Look up http://www.meetup.com/ is my first thought. You put in your area, interests, and hopefully find groups by you!
Anything animal related - shelters, rescues- should have vegans, or at least vegan interested folks! Sadly that's not always true, and their concern stops at 'pets'

How long have you been vegan?

I am in/near NYC. I'm fortunate to have access to countless events/places/etc. ....problem is I just don't know how to narrow down the choices and find active & worthwhile places. Maybe I'm lazy but I like to credit it to being shy instead.

I have been officially vegan only this year, but it was a long time coming. Feels like I've been doing it for years - in a good way! Before that I had not eaten meat for several years and rarely ate animal products but wasn't officially vegan.

Meet-up is a quick and easy way, and from then, maybe ask members of other sources. Also if you have wild oats or other natural food stores or even food co-ops they may sponsor food based groups/cooking clubs or other food related gatherings. I think meeting people is a "persistence" kind of thing.

There are several vegetarian / vegan social groups in the NYC area. These social groups can be a great way to meet people, because people go specifically to be friendly and meet new people! I actually met my wife through a Southern California veg*n Meetup.

Here is a partial list of the NYC-area vegetarian / vegan groups that I found on Meetup.com.

The New York City Vegetarian & Vegan Meetup: http://www.meetup.com/vegetarian-nyc/

NYC Vegetarian & Vegan Families: http://www.meetup.com/NYC-Vegetarian...egan-Families/

Riverdale, Kingsbridge, & Uptown Vegetarian Meetup: http://www.meetup.com/Riverdale-UptownNYC-Vegetarians/

The Staten Island Vegetarian & Vegan Meetup: http://www.meetup.com/SIVVMeetup/

Vegetarian Cooking Classes - NYC: http://www.meetup.com/Vegetarian-Cooking-Classes-NYC/

For me, finding places like that would be practically imposible, because there aren't a lot of veggies/vegans around here and those that I found so far were all a lot older (I'm talking 20 years at least), I also guess there aren't any members from Slovenia on here, or are there?

I'm in NYC too, and we can hang out anytime! I would love to have someone I know to go to these meetup things with. Feel free to send me a private message!

P.S. Yikes, I joined in 2006 and this is my first post?!? I guess I have been vegan 10 years now!
