Well, I've adopted my first dog, Mikey. I've been fostering him since March and growing very attached to him. So it's official now, he's part of the family. =)

Mikey's a black lab mix, and he's 1 and a half years old. Picture is attached.

Heh, thanks. He is very cute. I don't understand why he was never adopted (we've had him at the shelter since December). He's good with dogs, cats, children, adults, loves to play, very loyal... but he's a black lab and nobody wants a black lab these days. 'cept me.

I wish you could see the application I turned in for him. They have everyone fill out an application in order to adopt a dog. They screen the applicants pretty thoroughly to see if they'll be good dog owners. I made my application look like I'd be the worst dog owner ever, but they approved it right away.

Some of the questions: Where will you keep the dog during the night? "in the garage"... during the day? "in a dog house out back"... while you're gone? "tied to a tree in the neighbors lawn". How do you plan on training the dog? "let him watch animal planet". Do you know dogs require regular vet care? "No, that's a myth". Do you know about heartworm? "Yes" Will you keep him on heartworm preventative? "No, it's too expensive". What would make you want to return the dog? "If I get tired of him. Or if he sheds, barks, digs, or eats too much." etc etc.

That's awesome! He's a beautiful boy.

I know what you mean about nobody wanting black labs--at the local shelter, we cringe whenever black lab mixes come in b/c we know they'll be there forever. When there's 30 black dogs on the adoption floor, it's hard for any of them to stand out as individuals.

Congrats on such a gorgeous new addition

Do I see a bit of Alsation in Mikey?

Omg! This is in the US I gather? Labs are really popular here in the UK.. although I know what you mean about not standing out. Shame, since they're fantastic little dogs

I had never heard the term Alsation, had to look it up -- I take it Alsation is the UK term for a German Shepherd? He does look like he has a bit of shepherd in him because of the ears. Lab is his dominant trait, but outside of that I don't know. He has a very curly tail. Here's a close-up of his face and goofy grin.

My step-dad loves black labs, but his died last year, so it was pretty sad.

Congrats on giving your foster a home!

Oh, he is adorable! Congratulations!

Do black labs have a difficult time getting adopted because of their color? I know that people tend to be afraid of black dogs. People were always afraid of my Missie, who was the sweetest, best dog ever, but no one is afraid of Sophie, my Great Pyr, who is almost three times Missie's size.

Congrats on your new family member! He's adorable.

They say folks are a bit afraid of black dogs - you be the judge and tell me whether you're scared of my Max:

Now, that's not a very proper name for a dog.

What about spot? Huh?

Don't worry, mikie. We can still tell you apart--you two spell your name differently.

What a great looking dog, man.

I never knew that people generally avoid black dogs. 3 of my 4 dogs are mostly black. The two I found on the street I had no choice of color, but my pug I chose specifically because I love his little black wrinkley face.

Thanks guys. I think around here black is just such a common color that people don't see anything special when they see a black dog. "Just another black lab."

Yes, we thought about calling him Spot, but well he didn't have a spot, so Mikey was the next best choice.

He's gorgeous!!

And that's the first I've ever heard about black dogs not being popular - They're my favourite colour for a dog. Or any animal really.

Just to repeat, he's gorgeous!
