anyone have a gerbil as a pet? I've just had mice and hamsters. What are gerbils like? what do they need as far as care goes? I want to know what I am getting into here. Thanks

They basically require the same kind of care as hamsters do - the housing (20 gallon tank is a good size for a pair of gerbils), bedding (no pine or cedar), etc.

They are social and don't like being alone, as opposed to hamsters. If you're going to get gerbils, get atleast two - they live longer, are more active, healthier when around other gerbils.

Not good to feed them sunflower seeds as treats. They love them, but they can make your gerbil fat.

Don't get them from a pet store - a reputable breeder or shelter is best. you can go there and search for animals in your area that need a home.

And make sure that when you get them, they are both the same sex. You don't want to end up with a bunch of babies.

Here are some links I just found:

I'm not sur eif it was just my gerbil, but I used to have one, and he was really shy. Would rarely let anyone touch him.
