This may be posted in the wrong forum, so I apologize if it is.

I have a rabbit and for as long as I can remember, rabbits are vegetarian by nature. I never went into researching what a rabbit will and won't eat, but I assumed they (as herbivores) have no desire to taste flesh. Well, HERTZ, amongst other rabbit food brands have pellets (the main food a rabbit consumes in its diet) that contain all sorts of animal products. I'm not talking about milk or eggs. I am talking about "beef fat extract", "shredded pork bone", "hydraulized fish meal", and stuff like this.. obviously a very carniverous food in my opinion.

This is insane, and I have began boycotting these brands. I never thought I would be so focused on my pets ingredients and nutrition facts.. but now I am.

I use Kay Tee products only, of which seem vegetarian, but who knows.. Any suggestions from rabbit owners?

I have had several rabbits over the years.. and I have always fed them and my birds the Kaytee brand of foods. Here's a page for you to check out..

I think that's very strange that there's so much meat-derived ingredients in the Hertz (Hartz?) brand.. but they are known for being bottom of the barrel products anyway. My bunnies used to LOVE the yogurt chips, along with lots of Timothy hay.

I miss my bunnies now

Yeah, Hartz is one of the crappiest brands of pet food that exists. Avoid it at all costs. I'm sure the House Rabbit Society site ( has recommendations for high-quality brands of pellets.

I don't know about rabbit food, but I would assume Oxbow's rabbit pellets are probably very high quality, since their guinea pig pellets are top of the line. I think Kaytee Forti-Diet pellets (for gps) are supposed to be decent, so the same may apply to the rabbit pellets in that line. Is that what you're using? They also make a lot of other varieties that are full of crap (seeds, coloured bits, etc).

Does your bun have unlimited Timothy/grass hay? Hay should be the main food in a rabbit's diet.
