BAYTOWN, Texas -- The body of a Harris County sheriff's deputy was found in a canal in Baytown after he tried to rescue his dog, KPRC Local 2 reported Friday.

According to the sheriff's department, Deputy Eddy Wotipka, 51, was returning home from his shift Thursday night when neighbors told him there were dogs playing near the canal in the 6000 block of West Cedar Bayou Lynchburg Road near Thompson Road.

Cops are such despicable creatures, aren't they. You can never trust any of them.

Very sad story.

As Uno said - sarcasm. There's more than a few people on VB who take the position that all policemen are corrupt thugs who have no redeeming value either professionally or as individual human beings.

I live about half an hour from Baytown. The Lynchburg Road canal is bad news. Very swift current.

It's bad enough when someone dies but it's just wrong on so many levels when someone dies trying to do a good deed. Obvious, but I had to say it...

Peasant (1963-1972) and Fluffy (1970s?-1982- I think of you as 'Ambrose' now)- Your spirits outshone some humans I have known. Be happy forever.

Yes, especially when they're trying to rescue someone for whom the vast majority of people wouldn't even consider risking their lives.
