Yves seems to have quite a few new faux-meat products out. At my local grocery story I saw two new types of veggie dogs (bavarian smokies and italian sausages) and two types of "veggie tenders" - chicken- or beef-style. I picked up a box of the veggie chicken ones yesterday for $3.99 CDN. this afternoon i sauteed them up in a bit of olive oil, soy sauce and just a hint of maple syrup and hot sauce, to have in a stir-fry of veggies and brown rice.

they were definitely better than the overly salty, pencil-eraser textured "smart life" ones i'd tried a few months ago. they got the texture just about perfect (thought it's been nearly 10 years since i ate real chicken so i could be wrong about that) - it's got the same kind of tender, stringiness i remember, just maybe a little on the chewy side. my only complaint is that there is a definitelyl soy taste to them, which won't let you forget you're eating something synthetic. still, the best of all the faux-chicken "pieces" i've had yet. i don't think i'd like them unprepared, though.

i was going to link you up to a page about them on the http://www.yvesveggie.com site but it's not loading for me for some reason.

I definitely want to check those out; I've had a fearsome "nugget" jones lately.

The Yves veggie bacon, which I only started seeing recently, is excellent too, in sandwiches and tofu scrambles, and reasonably priced, and not as tedious as making my own.

Hurray!

yes, these aren't much like the breaded nuggets that yves used to sell. they are more like pieces of boneless white chicken meat, sort of shredded. like what you would put in a salad or sandwich, yk?

is this veggie bacon you talk about like "canadian" bacon? or is it more like strips?

Ah, hmm, "tenders". Yes, those were never my style as a meateater but I supposed one could bread'n'fry/bake them? to achieve nuggethood?

The bacon is in strips, kind of weird ellipses. My b.f. reports that they are somewhat disappointing on their own but I've been loving them in "B"LTs and he's been adding bits of them to his morning eggs. I fry them until they're crispy, longer than the cooking instructions. It even gives you that "smoky fingers" thing when you take them out of the package. Very nostalgic.

Vancouver, milady!

I picked these up at the Yaletown Choices. About $3.00 and change I think? I admit I was so curious I didn't pay much attention to the price.

Mmmm...Save-On. Yeah, definitely check them out. W/avocado, tomato, greens, onion sprouts and a little Nasoya/seed mustard on multigrain they make a [email protected]$$ sandwich.

For some reason I thought you were in Victoria. I apparently invent random facts about fellow members.
