Dear Friend of Sea Shepherd,

After leaving South Africa under the cover of night, and a brief stopover in Fremantle, Australia, where the Sea Shepherd flagship Farley Mowat and her crew received a warm welcome, and the City of Fremantle made Fremantle the home port of the Farley Mowat (only the second vessel in this cities history to receive this distinction), we arrived in Melbourne earlier this week.

In Melbourne we will be acquiring crew and provisions in preparation for our long voyage to return to Antarctica and defend the whales destined for slaughter by the Japanese. During the next few months, we will be having a series of fundraising events the first of which will be An Evening for the Whales on August 4th in Melbourne.

In recent days, we have seen a number of articles about the Japanese so-called research indicating that they are killing pregnant and lactating female whales in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary. Japan has also been exposed for its use of aid packages to swing the International Whaling Commission vote towards their favor. This only increases our resolve to defend these gentle giants.

The South African Newspaper Die Burger came out in support of Sea Shepherd read the article and see the cartoon on our website. Also in South Africa, Francois Hugo continues to fight against the horrific slaughter of Namibian Fur Seals. Thanks to the efforts of Francois Hugo and Seal Alert in South Africa, the DeBeers Diamond Corporation has stated that they oppose the killing of the South African fur seals in Namibia and they will help to convince the government of Namibia to end sealing.

I recently returned from the Galapagos where I met with Sean OHearn, Sea Shepherds new Galapagos Director, and the new National Park Director, Raquel Molina. Sean will be working on some new initiatives and programs and coordinating our efforts to patrol the marine reserve with our patrol boat, Sirenian. Allison Watson also worked with Animal Balance on the island of Santa Cruz to organize an intensive sterilization program for cats and dogs on the Galapagos Islands. By reducing and controlling the cat and dog populations the community is healthier and the native species are protected, helping to conserve bio-diversity in the Galapagos.

I am also pleased to announce that Persia White has joined Sea Shepherds Board of Directors. We are excited about the opportunities and experience that she will bring to the organization. Persia is a human rights advocate, animal rights activist, and environmentalist. Persia was honored by PETA as a 2005 Humanitarian Of The Year and received an award from Farm Sanctuary in May 2006.

With your help we continue to fight for marine wildlife on many fronts, all over the world. Your support helps to insure that we can carry on in our direct-action efforts, intervention, and protection campaigns and for that, I thank-you.

For the oceans,

Captain Paul Watson
