Japan will resume serving whale meat to schoolchildren after a gap of 20 years, an official says.

Elementary and junior high school students in the south-western Wakayama Prefecture will be served whale meat twice a month starting in January, according to Yoshiki Tachibana, a local education board official.

It is the first time the province has served the meat since whaling was banned internationally in 1982.
