I just found out that Newark, New Jersey mayor Cory Booker, who was elected yesterday to fill the US Senate seat left vacant by the death of Senator Frank Lautenberg, is a vegetarian. It was mentioned in an article about his election. According to Wikipedia, he's been veg for health and environmental reasons since college.

Other than Kucinich, I didn't know of any other major politicians in this country who are veg, so it's good to know there will be at least one in Congress again.

That is really cool!

I know Peter Singer had been involved with the Greens party for a while and ran as a candidate. He didn't win, but got a sizeable amount of the vote, especially for a Green's candidate.

We also have a man called Michael Kirby, he's a former High Court Justice and is now a patron of Voiceless. (He's not vego yet, still eats fish at last report, but I think he was trying to slowly minimise his meat intake. That's at least a start.....). The great thing about that, is that he can talk about animal law, so to have HIS brain and knowledge on our side? Is priceless.

In my search to see if we had ANY vego politicians (a rare thing for any of ours to advocate) I found this.

Well, if we're talking about "almost veg" politicians, then Bill Clinton gets into the conversation as the most famous. His daughter is (used to be?) vegan, and convinced him to go nearly vegan for health reasons.

And yet, with all the veg*n staffers mentioned in that article, there was no mention of a single current member of Congress who is veg*n.
