Do yourselves a favor... Don't ever come to Japan. This is a common practice here. Actually many fish are served alive as well. Just last week, at our office's enkai I got to watch people eating a small minow-like fish (didn't ask the name, I was too horrified) as the fish tried to jump from the bowls and flop around on the table. Seeing something like that really enforces why I went vegan. These fish were literally trying to swim for their lives.

edit: that was the restaurant that stopped serving them alive.
