\t Are you a man who cares about animals but thinks it is fine to treat women like one? Then Caso Diablo is the place for you. The world's first vegan strip club, in Portland, Oregon a hippyish town in the US that prides itself as the most vegan-friendly in the country serves up meat- and diary-free chilli cheese fries, chocolate/strawberry cheesecake and mushroom burgers along with the naked women.
The owner, Johnny Diablo, describes himself as an "ethical vegan", and claims that half of the dancers are vegetarian or vegan. The place is sleazy, without even the veneer of a "gentlemen's club": bar staff are topless, while the dancers take absolutely everything off and are instructed to sit on customers' laps. The naked women draw the men in, says Diablo, which, in turn, means they will learn to love vegan food.
Treating women like meat and eating it often go together, for example at Hooters, an American-run chain that operates in 39 US states and a number of other countries including the UK, serves up burgers, wings and steaks, as well as young waitresses wearing very little.
But as the sex industry has proliferated in recent years, using women's bodies to promote vegetarianism and veganism has become more commonplace. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) is notorious for its misogynistic tactics. A porn site, peta.xxx, is due to be launched later this year, much to the disgust of feminists. In Caso Diablo, non-human animals are afforded more respect than the strippers. A sign over the bar reads, "Please do not wear fur, feathers, silk, wool or leather on the stage. Thank you the animals."

I feel like I read about this a long time ago, has this place been around for a while?

If so, does that mean it's a successful business? Huh.

I wish vegan restaurants got this much attention.

It's too bad the article puts such a derogatory vibe on the place. It's no worse than any other strip club.

This is old. It opened bombed, and iirc, is now closed. Hopefully never to open again.

I was gonna say that I can't see it doing well, but someone already pointed out that it's already closed. None of the vegan guys I know IRL would go to a strip club.

Even if they could get vegan chili dogs?

What if the chili dogs were really, really good?

Cause that seems unfair, to hide really good vegan chili dogs in a strip club.

But I bet they weren't very good at all.

Johnny Diablo shot himself in the foot by billing it as a Gentlemen's Club. Many of the lesbians who go to strip clubs in Portland are vegan, and it would make more sense to pitch this particular concept to the ladies.

I've only been to one strip club (in Hawaii) and I didn't care for it. It was a very depressing place. That was about 10 or 11 years ago.

The clubs main claim to veganism seems to be that strippers cannot wear any leather, fur, silk or wool. If a dancer slips up and sports snakeskin heels, Diablo says he pulls the woman aside to talk about not bringing murder victims into the establishment.

I have to say that's brilliant (although I think the "main claim" is actually vegan food).

A web search shows that it does seem to still be open. Not a supporter of strip clubs - I think they're pretty horrible - but if you're going to have them it's better that they're vegan.

Personally I would never go to a strip club, but what's up with all these second wave feminists in this thread? This isn't the 70's. Women can make their own decisions about what they want to do with their bodies.

While I can't attest to the veganness of the clientele in Portland clubs () I have to agree that I think it's amusing that a business owner and/or the commenters in this thread would assume that the clientele would be only men.
