as wedding plans get into full swing, i could use some suggestions for food.

i'm getting married in Maui with parents and siblings as our only guests. then flying home for a kickbutt huge reception for the friends and relatives. so because it's not being held right after the ceremony, we don't feel we need to serve a sit-down dinner. so we're going to start it later and just serve finger foods and dessert trays at 11 or so.

being a casual non-traditional wedding, i think instead of a cake we're going to do cupcakes, decorated and stacked up. easy portioning, easy way to have a couple different flavours, and i've seen photos of it done, it looks awesome. so that's pretty much settled.

so all i need is some ideas of what else to serve. we're doing fruit and raw veggie platters of course (i will look into vegan dips for both, nobody will know the difference) and the omnis will have meat and cheese trays and buns to put together their own sandwiches. all side dishes and desserts i want to be vegan. so i dunno, pasta salads and whatnot. but the omnis can't know it's vegan so nothing real tofu-y lol.

any ideas and/or recipes would be much appreciated oh, and the reception will be Hawaiian themed. i could also use ideas on favours. i was thinking sugar cookies with our last initials printed on them with coloured icing (saw it in a magazine, looked neat) but it wouldn't be very hawaiian unless we use pineapple shaped cookie cutters which would be downright tacky lol.

Since the wedding's in Hawaii, and your reception guests will have missed out on the whole Hawaii experience, why not do a Luau theme? lots of tropical fruits, tiki torches, hawaiian music, etc...

Not that I'm planning a wedding or anything - but for some reason I've been thinking about this very thing lately....How about potstickers, egg rolls (or spring rolls), veggie sushi, stuffed wontons, those sorts of finger foods? Lots of Dim Sum items can be vegetarian and are great buffet sorts of foods. Not exactly Hawaiian but there's definitely an Asian influence to lots of Hawaiian foods...

Some big trays of tropical fruits (and lots of pineapple) would carry on the Luau/Hawaiian theme... (oh duh, Randy just said that)...

The latest issue of some Veggie magazine (the name escapes me at this hour of the morning..) has tons of awesome wedding menus...

Sounds fun...

if I were wedding in Hawaii and wanting some vegan food and some omni food I would be heavily tempted to get a buttload of sushi. I understand it is much less expensive than on the mainland if you know where to go.

Alternately the li-hing fruit snacks are excellent.

The April issue of VegNews (the sex & romance issue) had I think the top 10 vegan weddings with menu listed. It's a good jumping off point.

don't get vegnews here that i've seen.

but yes as i said the reception will be hawaiian themed and there will be tons of fruit. my only concern there is getting decent fruit in february but we'll have to wait and see on that one. sushi would probably not be an option. the groom's side of the family is very old fashioned, traditional, french canadian. their diet pretty much consists of pork, potatoes, baked beans and frozen vegetables. anything "wierd" won't get eaten. plus sushi is quite expensive.

my family will eat anything but there will be like 5 of them versus like 300 of the inlaws

I want a vegetarian wedding. I've spent the last year mentally preparing myself for the arguments with my mother.

Are you making the food yourself or are you getting a caterer?

Here were some recipes I found, you could veg*nize a lot of them:

If you go on http://www.recipezaar.com and search for Hawaiian you get tons of recipes.

cool thanks

i'm hoping to do it all myself. there's no sit-down dinner, it's just all finger foods buffet-style so it shouldn't be too difficult. fiance thinks all we have to do is buy some meat trays and buns and huck 'em on a table. pah.

hey this one's already vegan. sounds like something i might have to try. although i read "pudding" and then read "cut into squares" and said "uhh.. huh?" lol

Haupia (Coconut Pudding)

3 cups frozen coconut milk, thawed or

2 cups fresh coconut milk mixed with 1 cup water

1/2 cup sugar

1/2 cup cornstarch

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

pinch of salt

In a saucepan, combine coconut milk and sugar.

Gradually mix in cornstarch. Add vanilla and salt.

Stir and cook on medium heat until thickened.

Pour into an oiled 9-inch square pan. chill for at least 1 hour. Cut into 36 squares.

Sounds gross, but then again I don't like coconut. But it would probably turn out like a custard. Heres a picture I found out it:

Edit: Here's the Wikipedia article on it:
