Are ground chia seeds okay if they haven't been soaked?
 
I tend to put ground up chia seeds on cereal, porridge, sandwiches, salads, etc., without having been soaked beforehand. However I've just found out you're supposed to soak them. Is it different with ground chia?

I would be a little cautious -- if you are only using a small amount and putting them in something wet or moist, they will probably absorb some of the moisture in the food and not do all of the expanding in your GI tract (if they congeal together in your bowels, you could imagine they might cause a blockage). Oh dear. I'll soak them next time. I've actually been getting a bit of constipation recently, do you think that may be the cause? And if it's not severe, should it clear up with some time? =/

Eeks! I'd never thought of that! I do only use chia with liquids like making a 'puddin' or smoothie, but have seen recipes where they're used to coat raw foods- things like vegan sushi.

For the past few days, I've been soaking a tablespoonful of the chia seeds in a bowl of almond milk in the fridge at night, and putting that on muesli the next morning. My digestive issues are clearing up now, very happy. :)

I actually used to sprinkle dry chia on top of peanut butter on toast. Definitely will not be doing that again. Always going to soak them before eating!

I haven't had any problems with sprinkling them on tofu or pasta as long as there was also oil present. I don't think it's as dramatic as all that, but I'd certainly not eat a handful. Maybe there are different types of Chia seeds? I have the black ones and used them on baked tofu with other spices and oil, prior to cooking. With the pasta though I sprinkled them on after cooking, but like I said, there was oil and other spices on the pasta and I stirred well before taking a bite.

I would actually put quite a lot of dry chia on top of things. Maybe a tablespoonful, sprinkled on top of the toast, not really mixed in with oil or anything.
