Have any of you used xylitol as a sugar substitue? I am a new Veg*n and am slowly transitioning into veganism. I was at my local Health Food Store and asked about sugar subs and xylitol was highly recommended.

Hmm, I've never even heard of xylitol, and I'm usually up on sugar substititutes.

I just google'd it, I can't find much that's useful on it, except that it's toxic to dogs.

ETA: Apparently it's ok in low doses (I.E. like the amount in chewing gums, etc.), but should be avoided in large doses because it can cause cramps, gas, etc.

It's in the same category as xylitol, basically. That page has stuff on a bunch of sweeteners.
