I've decided to follow a pretty intense exercise regimen this summer, and even though I already have a balanced vegan diet, I think it might be good to buy some protein powder... just to make sure that I'm getting enough protein to complete my exercise and build muscle. But walking into a GNC is so overwhelming! So many options!

Which ones are vegan? I know there's soy protein, whey (which I wouldn't use because it's from milk) and the seaweedy stuff...

Any suggestions/recommendations?

I use a powered rice protein by Nutribiotic. If you double the serving size, which I believe makes it four tablespoons, is 24 grams of protein. I toss that in my smoothie with some flax oil, frozen fruit, and some soy milk.

I use Puritan's Pride Soy Protein Powder since they usually have a sale

going on as they do now. I get plain which has no added sweetener.

I add that to my smoothies, but I use a half scoop

and I add tofu yogurt, soy milk, frozen fruit, sweetener

to taste.

Whole foods has a soy protein powder with natural vanilla flavoring (very subtle) that we buy. One scoop has 24 grams of protein, and there are 16 scoops in an $8 tub.

I'm pretty sure GNC's Pro Performance Protein 95 is vegan.

Personally, I think soy protein powders are a bad idea. Isolated soy protein is the only soy product that's been linked to cancer, and it's usually extracted using hexane.

A rice or vegetable protein powder is probably a better bet. My boyfriend has a hemp protein powder that he likes--it has a lot of fiber, too, which is a bonus.

I use GeniSoy protein shake powder mix. i got it at GNC and just asked the guy where the vegetarian protein shakes were. i got the strawberry banana flavor it tastes really good and you can mix it with soymilk or juice or water or anything else you want and its just like a smoothie. highly recommended

Another fan of Genisoy here.

Also, Naturade is vegan. And widely available.

Molly, where does your boyfriend get hemp protein powder? I don't think I have ever seen it before. Do they sell it at Whole Foods?

If you have a Trader Joe's near you, check out their Soy Protien powder. It's $9.99 for a 2lb container and it is vitamin fortified. I usually throw a couple scoops in my morning smoothie.

I've gotten chocolate flavored GNC's Protein 95, and I got some other one that was a mix of soy, rice, and pea protein....both were nasty! Is there such a thing as a GOOD tasting powdered protein? Or should I Just give up the search?

I think Genisoy is the only one that tastes... Okay. Mixed with some decent soymilk, that is.

The GNC is actually one of the better tasting ones.

Yeah, it just doesn't taste all that good, but

if you add some powdered drink mix to it

(like strawberry Kool-Aid in a strawberry smoothie)

you can't taste the protein powder. Kewl tip

from Deb, she is the best

If my smoothie doesn't have the powder, I don't think it tastes as good. I'm odd I guess.
