I have read that the stuff on cans... the stuff that coats the metal can come off into the food. Does anyone else worry about that or do they just say to hell with it and eat it anyway???

I haven't heard too much about it. Can I ask where you read about it? I'd be interested.

I use canned beans, canned tomatoes and sometimes canned corn. I don't worry about it much. I wash the stuff off before cooking/eating, and that's I guess that's the end of my thinking about it.

About the only cans we use are full circle organic brand. Not that that makes a difference in regards to the metal i suppose though. Beans, corn, and tomato puree usually.

it's the BPA you have to worry about. It can leach into foods. Same as reheating food in plastic containers. I believe Eden Brand does not use BPA in their packaging.

Also, always make sure you heat canned foods thoroughly before eating too.

In australia the cans have a polymeric coating that prevents leaching. There is a risk of bpa leaching but it is considered to be of an amount that is a risk to children only.

I know that they always would encourage you to change the food into a new container for putting it in the fridge if you don't eat it all. I guess this has something to do with the chemical make up of the can and potential contamination of the food itself. So maybe it isn't an issue until you actually open the can and the air gets at it!

I've heard that the cans with the white coating inside are the ones that contain BPA, the ones to worry about. Alot of brands no longer continue using them since the popularity of the BPA scare.

I've never heard of this problem before. We buy a decent amount of canned food, usually things such as peas, corn and sometimes beans.

O_o
I buy cans, I eat from cans. Mainly baked beans, sweetcorn, and the odd bit of soup. I also leave leftovers in the fridge still in the can, although my mum says you shouldnt as it 'makes the food taste like the can'. Still alive last time I checked.

I eat a lot of canned tomatoes and olives, but I generally eat fresh or frozen veggies.
