It can also make a big difference if you're able to buy your fruit locally and in season. When I buy fresh local strawberries from the farmer's market, they will last easily a week and still look and taste gorgeous. When I buy strawberries out of season that have been shipped across the country, I'm lucky if I get 2-3 days before they start to develop spots. That's because I buy the local strawberries the same day they were picked or the day after. When I buy stuff that has been shipped in, it may be more than a week old already before I even get it home.
Oh, and I keep things like peaches, nectarines, bananas, mangos, etc. in a hanging wire basket. Lots of air circulation. Most of the rest of my fruit goes in the fridge. I keep a careful eye on any fruit that isn't in the fridge and try to eat that first.
