I have been lacto-ovo for nearly 3 1/2 years now. I have absolutely no regrets or wishful thinking about missed meat because its usually the spices and flavors that I crave and that's easy enough with vegetarian food. EXCEPT, I do miss smoked salmon -- on bagels, in sushi (even though I do love, love, love veggie sushi!), etc. What are reasonable vegetarian alternatives to salmon?

I have no idea sorry but I just wanted to pop in and say that I know what you mean about smoked salmon. It is the only thing that I miss! It's not that I want to eat it (and I had plenty of opportunity over Xmas to eat it not to mention family members trying to get me to eat it) but I do miss it. Even though I now think the whole thing of where it's come from is gross.. It didn't even smell that appealing to me, I just miss it. I have no idea why!

there are a bunch of recipes online, or you could look into asian fake meat suppliers- quite a few offer salmon- i'm not sure what flavour it generally resembles, but i bet you can tweak something.

I used to love bagels with cream cheese and lox (which is really smoked salmon) and I had good success subbing thinly sliced roasted red pepper--it had a smoky taste.

****I have a blog--check me out!

I missed eating Philadelphia salmon cream cheese on bagels, but I since ditched eating salmon and bagels! So my alternative is this:

In food processor blend pink beans (cooked in pressure cooker for maximum creaminess), 1/4 cup water, 2 tablespoons vinegar, 1/4 teaspoon salt or more to taste, two spins around small processor of Sriracha or more to taste, 4 tablespoons tahini. I think this makes about 5 cups of spread.

I swear this tastes so much like the Philadelphia salmon cream cheese!
