What to buy at Whole Foods? - VeggieBoards

I just started shopping at Whole Foods and so far I'm loving it! Especially the bulk section! But being new to vegetarianism and healthy eating in general I feel like I'm never really sure what to look for on ingredient lists or what foods have the greatest health benefits, etc.

What are some healthy vegetarian food that I should have on hand all the time? Or things that are really yummy without a bunch of nasty ingredients?

Whole Foods specializes in organic vegetables, vegan/vegetarian products and none of their products have preservatives or unnatural coloring (I think this is right). It doesn't really matter to vegetarians, but even their meats are free from steroids and hormones or whatnot. So, everything there should be healthy (except for the snack asile with cookies, popcorn, etc). But even their snacks are healthier than grocery store snacks. You won't find Little Debbies at Whole Foods.

I know you wanted suggestions for healthy foods, but Whole Foods' deli baked cookies are awesome (I particularly liked the vanilla almond).

Whole Foods is the place for stocking up on dry items! Get a lot of beans in the bulk section as well as nutritional yeast, nuts, rice, quinoa and yummy dried fruit etc. Also you will find the vegetarian sugar at the best price there. You can get the sugar bulk too but I would go into the baking section and buy the bags instead...it's actually cheaper generally (but check the price to be sure).

Look for loose produce such as loose carrots etc. for the best prices.

Vegan chocolate and/or carob is also a good find there.

WF can be good for bulk but if you don't have to have organic, Sprouts is usually cheaper. However their selection is more limited.

I buy things at WF that I can't find anywhere else, or that is cheapest at WF. Yes, WF is actually quite competitive on many items compared to mainstream grocery stores. I don't think their produce prices are all that unreasonable compared to Kroger or Tom Thumb but they are quite a bit higher than Sprouts. However they make up for it with a better selection. I've found that WF is often very competitive or the cheapest for some brands of frozen entrees like Kashi or Amy's. You could probably find both cheaper at Wal-Mart or Target but I refuse to shop at either store, so...

If you shop selectively, WF doesn't have to take your whole paycheck! I just wouldn't do all of my shopping there. That would get very expensive very quickly because they are pretty expensive for canned goods, non-grocery items like toilet paper, toiletries, etc.

Check out the produce. They have lots of different fruits and veggies and green leafies, yum! At the moment, I keep going to Whole Foods because they have FRESH FIGS and they're the best thing every (at least one of them).

I buy most all my produce there because it always seems to look so fresh and not terribly picked over. They sell the huge container of Kal Nutritional Yeast there in the supplement isle and that brand is seriously the best! However I don't buy much bulk there I usually stick to Costco for those things, except they do carry grains that are a bit harder to find. Mayo, dairy free yogurts, butter and icecream arent such bad buys their either. It does seem to cost and arm and leg for frozen burgers and such, which is a shame. I really like the prices of their generic 365 brand, its not of poor quality either.

Of the "healthy"/"premium" markets around here I have found that WF actually has the best balance of price vs selection vs quality when you compare it to Sprouts and HEB Central Market, which isn't a health food store as such but is more of a premium gourmet supermarket with a wide selection of healthy foods.

I don't go to Whole Foods much although I've one that's about 15 minutes away. Maybe once or twice a year? I'm not particularly that enchanted with them since I've been able to pick up a lot of products from other stores at lower price. But I go there to pick up vitamins, vegan worchester sauce, vegan cookies (Uncle Eddies and Michelle Naturally) and sweets.

I like the chain Henry's (previously owned by Wild Oats, now gobbled up by WF for health food market domination)

I don't know what specifically to tell you to buy, but I shop at WF's 90% of the time. I just love that I don't have to worry about the stuff that I buy having "junk" in it.

I like their pickles, the 365 brand. I refuse to buy the regular name brand pickles or the store brand pickles from the regular supermarkets because of the dyes and colors and other junk that are added, but that stuff is not in the WF brand. I also like the Cascadian Farm and Trader Joe's brand pickles for the same reason.

WF can be expensive, but they have some nice sales. I recently picked up some huge bunches of organic kale for .99 each. Keep an eye out for the sale signs. They have some great breads. My favorite is the 5 olive bread.

I buy a lot of the 365 organics. Very reasonable and if you order a case, you will get a 10% discount.

I usually get all the awesome produce I cant get at regular stores (golden beets, dandelion greens, buddhas hand citron, burdock, heirloom tomatoes, various seasonal mushrooms, etc....) and for their preserved veggies (kalamata and other various olives, preserved lemons, preserved artichokes, capers). I'm not big on the fake cheeses etc.....

I LOVE golden beets...just got some the other day at WF. I've never seen buddhas hand citron there and burdock only occasionally; maybe it varies region to region? They HAVE had the most amazing apples and squash lately.

Lol, they had some awesome fuji apples in a sample container. I grabbed one, and my grandfather made me spit it out because "I could get hapatitus!"

Stuff you know you can't get anywhere else. I usually grab a giant jar of Vegenaise, some Daiya mozzarella, some Uncle Eddie's cookies, Waleed's plain pita chips, and a pint of hummus from the cold case. Also, check out the prepared foods at the service deli counter and see if there's anything you could replicate at home for cheaper or just get some recipe ideas.

When I go to WF I spend most of my time in the produce section. WF is one of the few places that carries organic for pretty much every type of produce they have. (versus at my local grocer they only have a small selection of organics)

Also, the granola in the bulk bins at WF/other natural food stores is heavenly - they have tons of different kinds and I have it with Almond or Coconut Milk- Mmmmm!!!

If you're wanting a treat, pick up some Almond or Coconut milk ice cream too - it is SO good!!!

I also usually stock up on quinoa, quinoa noodles, lentils (red and brown), pasta sauce, a few cans of Eden's Organic Beans to have on hand, oh and check out WF's coupons online and see if it's anything you need/want and print them out.

Lastly, be sure to check out their deli salad bar thingy... they usually have a lot of awesome things like grilled artichoke hearts, or thai vegan dumplings, tofu curry etc. I'm getting hungry now! Lol. I'll find the link to their coupons and be right back

Okay, I've been curious to try Daiya, sounds like I'm trying the mozzarella for sure. What about those vegan sausages people have raved about? I've forgotten the brand name and flavors they recommended. I'm excited for the bakery, I suppose that is where we will pick up my birthday cake
I'm also going to look for Gardein chik'n cutlets, if I come across them.

I have a feeling I'm going to go crazy in there...

Appreciate all the input. Sorry Amy didn't see this thread, but to be honest, I didn't really look either

For Daiya, it's my favorite to have it on mini pizzas - I either use a whole wheat pita bread or an Ezekiel english muffin... spread a little marinara sauce on it and sprinkle with Daiya, then bake til the Daiya melts Takes 5 mins and is soooo good! (of course topping it with various veggies is also delicious just takes a few more mins since I usually soften things like onions, mushrooms bell peppers etc before putting them on pizza.

Have'a corn chips are amazing. I can only ever find them at whole foods. There are maybe 5 ingredients total for the chips.
