It is a chickpea/tahini spread.. Though tahini is optional, it is strongly reccomended, by ME, FafaFrappy, the famous (healthy) hummus addict!

When I have it, I tend to eat around 4 ounces, or more, each time i open the container. I love the stuff, and I cannot resist it in it's many shapes and forms! I eat it with veggies, crackers, with pita, in sandwiches, with a spoon., etc. etc... The possibilities are endless!

Aside from chickpeas and tahini, it usually had lemon juice, garlic, and POSSIBLY salt or another spice. But some people add many different things like roasted garlic, roasted red pepper, scallions, parsley, etc. etc.

I, personally, don't have a recipe. It's all about creating a blend suitable to your taste and adding a little bit of whatever you think it needs more of, or just whatever you feel. Like I said before, the possibilities are endless.

Can't you see my zeal?

I so hate hummus. Basing this on what I've read, I guess I'm the only vegan in this universe who detests hummus, but I simply can't stand it. It tasted a little like peanut butter, which I don't like. But maybe I made it the wrong way (have to blame the recipe then, though). Anyway, I don't want to discourage anyone, and I guess this is off topic, but I just had to express myself somewhere.

I would recommend, though, that if you're making hummus for the first time, you should put only a minimal amount of tahini in it. That's what possibly got my hummus all messed up, because it tasted just like tahini.

I made hummus once but it wasn't very good. However, the stuff I buy at the grocery story that is garlic/onion flavoured is fantastic. I love it best with tortilla chips.

I don't put tahini in mine (long standing problem with me and the sesame seed), but I do love to put El Pato in it. El Pato is a wonderfully spicy tomato sauce (not ketchup) that gives the hummus a wonderful kick. This, plus loads of lemon and garlic in it makes a hummus that is to die for!

Whatever you do, though, don't put curry powder in it. I did once and it was dead nasty.

And like frappy, I eat it with or on everything, too. It's wonderful in place of mayo for sandwiches, used as a dip for veggies and chips, over baked potatoes instead of sourcream, and even thinned a tad and used as salad dressing.

I love hummus!

I like adding Chili Powder and Cumin to mine.

I myself am not crazy about Tahini, so I put just a tablespoon or so when I make it. Tahini does have a peanut taste, which I also don't like on top of being allergic.

I also wish it was legal to marry a bean paste.

Hummus is yummy! I haven't ventured to make it, since I don't own a blender, but I every store-bought variety I've bought I've loved.

I luuurve hummus too. Loved it as a kid, went off it for a spell, then realised what a mistake I'd been making. Trader Joes's Spicy hummus is my fave

I've made hummus once...forgot to put the tahini in, and put soooo much garlic in that I just couldn't eat it. i left it in the fridge. Took 2.5 months before it started going fuzzy! I just got a new spicy hummus recipe though. Looking forward to trying that one out next week sometime!

I keep trying hummus...thinking the taste might change. Yeah. It doesn't. It's gross every time. So is Baba Ghanouj. Apparently I don't like chickpeas.

Hummus is one of my favourite things. In the UK it is now a staple of the cold produce shelf of every supermarket, in regular and lowfat versions. Sun dried tomato and roasted red pepper versions are also available. In Germany I'm still struggling to find it fresh (I have found hummus in a jar that was rank). So back to the recipe book.

I don't often stick to one recipe, but there are some key ingredients, for me. Those are chick peas, a splash of lemon or lime and garlic (and possibly a dusting of paprika as a serving suggestion). Tahini is great, but not essential for every variant. If only I could find decent fresh pita bread again, life would be complete.

Tinned chick peas are the easy (and my normal) option, a great variation is with sprouted chick peas.

Don't be afraid carried. It's one of the easiest things to make (maybe besides pasta). And it's great to bring over homemade hummus and pita to friends places or parties!
