I just joined the forums today. I am 38 yrs old, live in Chicago.
I have been pondering a vegetarian lifestyle for more than a year. It is the reason why the meat in my diet was becoming slimmer and my breakfasts were all meat free, and in some weeks, about half of my evening meals were meat free and I played around with vegetarian recipes. Then only recently I began to study it deeply to see if it could be for me and bought some books.
Finally, i just decided to go for it, why bother with chicken... I never liked it anyway and that's the truth. I ate it because my mother fried it. I think she and I were both surprised when that confession came out of my mouth without thinking about it first.
I went to PETA website and saw all those terrible things that I always knew were going on anyway. I don't want to be a part of that horror. I thought... I'd be damned if I'd want someone to treat my Ganymede that way!!
(She's my cat, of course, who I adopted from PetSmart in 1999.)
So, as of tonight, I am vegetarian for 4 days, and I don't miss any meat, and I have not been hungry either... While my goal was to only give up animal flesh, I found out about that Rennet enzyme in cheese... from the stomach linings of baby animals?... no, no, no. So, I am dumping that too.
I have been considering this for so long, I don't foresee any huge problems in the change. I can only take one day at a time. So far I haven't met any opposition from any of my family or close meat-eating pals. In fact, most are very supportive.
I am grateful for any support and I am glad I found this forum.
