Hi all

I have been a vegetarian for about a year now - but not what I would call a 'good enough vegetarian'. I cut out red meat, chicken and fish, but was completely oblivious to the amount of animal products in everyday foods...

I went away a few days ago and visited a yummy lolly-store. I was about to buy a packet of gummy bears when I noticed in the ingredients it said 'gelatine (from pork)'. I had never given a second thought to this before... I didn't buy the lollies (needless to say...)

I did some research this morning on-line and was *shocked* at the amount of animal products actually used!!! I had NO idea!!!

Why oh why do we exploit animals like this? I am ashamed to now know that Australia has one of the worse conditions for pigs - 95% of pigs live in small metal cages, bred to be eaten/kept pregnant....

Oh I could go on!!!

That's right... I'm meant to introduce myself!

My name is Jess, I'm 22, live in Sydney, and have a Diploma in Children's Services.

Welcome to VB!

Yup, you gotta watch out for that gelatin, it's in practically everything.

Hi Jess!!

Don't beat yourself up. You were Vegetarian. I didn't know until last year that beer and wine have (isinglass) fish air bladder in them. Good thing there are some vegan beers, but Guiness is not one of them. http://www.btinternet.com/~p.g.h/vegan_beer_list.htm

There are also lists circulating with the hidden animal ingredients -- like Carmine is crushed bugs. It is used to color some juices red.

Welcome to VB!!
