hey all. we're going to try this program again. oldbies (existing members) will pair up with newbies (new members) to help them with any questions they have about the site and vegetarianism/veganism. sometimes it's hard starting out in a site as active as ours without knowing anyone. this way new members have a chance of getting to know someone right away so hopefully they'll stick around and post with us i know it can be intimidating for some people to try to ask questions in such a busy place, we just want everyone to feel welcome and know that they can always ask questions

oldbies that would like to participate let me know here or in pm, (unless you have already told me in the other thread). i had originally wanted to pair people by location but only 3 people pm'ed me with their locations so i think we'll just do it randomly for now and see how it goes. if anyone has suggestions on how to improve the program let me know also be prepared to have multiple adoptees until more oldbies join. i don't see this being something real time consuming, just the odd pm here and there, so having more than one shouldn't be a problem. but if it is or if you have a few on the go and don't want any more for a bit let me know. please remember to tell your adoptees if you plan to be away from vb for a while and try to get someone else to take over for you or let me know and i will pair them up with other folks until you get back. if i'm not around and a newbie posts about wanting to be adopted, please feel free to step in, you don't have to wait for me to pair you up, but please let me know in the thread or by pm that you have adopted the person so i know not to pair them with someone else

newbies that want to be adopted by an oldbie please post here. if you joined before this was posted or we've missed you and you would like to be paired with someone just post here and we'll make sure you get someone. if you don't necessarily want to be paired with someone and just want to ask a question or two you can post in this thread and one of us will answer, or pm one of us oldbies (we're always glad to help), or you can post in the community assistance forum. we also recommend reading the faq that is posted when you first join. tells you all the basic stuff like how to post etc.

if you have troubles sending a pm to your adopter post here and they or whoever's around at the time will walk you through it.

I'll adopt you. I don't live in Florida (not even close), but I'm willing to help anyone who needs it wherever they live. I'm a Lacto vegetarian-going-on-Vegan.

girl2beaver 06-14-2005 12:42 PM

I'd love to adopt someone! I'm in Maryland.

~Linda~ 06-14-2005 01:31 PM

girl2beaver 06-14-2005 01:46 PM

Pasta>Cruelty 06-14-2005 02:41 PM

I'll adopt someone. I live in Maryland.

Christy 06-14-2005 02:53 PM

I forgot if I PMed you, so count me in. I'm in Atlanta.

brahmacharya 06-14-2005 03:26 PM

I'll take on anyone who needs help...I'm in Vancouver, Canada.

mayuko 06-14-2005 03:29 PM

i've PMed LF already (i think), but just to put myself in this thread.. yeah, i'm down for "adopting" someone (or multiple someones). i'm in vermont right now, moving to oregon in about a week, and it doesn't make a difference to me if my adoptee is from either of those places

revelsunrise 06-14-2005 05:58 PM

I might like to adopt somebody.

ETA: I live in South Carolina, but it doesn't matter to me where my newbie is from.

Vicky 06-14-2005 06:16 PM

i would love to adopt, the more the better

and i'm from Providence, RI which is New England ... and i'm origially from Eastern Europe if that helps... but it really doesn't matter to me where they are from

Jennifer89 06-14-2005 08:39 PM

I can adopt! From North Carolina... don't bite (that often)

LadyFaile 06-14-2005 11:50 PM

woohoo so many volunteers

yet only 2 newbies have come forward. i wonder if it'd annoy people to approach them and ask if they want to be adopted. if we do i think the adopter should approach instead of me doing the back and forth to find out if they want to be adopted or not. maybe i'll just pm you guys names of recently joined members and you can ask if they want you to adopt them or not, or would you rather i pm them first, or that we just let them come to us? this is the only part that's still confusing to me maybe i'll give it a day or two and see if more newbies come forward

Vicky 06-15-2005 08:14 AM

i wonder if we should have a thread just for newbies in the " new to vegetarianism" thread.

something like " we know it's difficult to start off when you're new to vegetarianism and to a message board, please reply if you want to be adopted by someone who has been here for a while ... and so on"

nixona 06-15-2005 09:28 AM

I need adopted!

LF, I think that naturally oldbies who are used to posting are going to come forward in greater numbers. I think as long as everybody checks into this thread and mentions it from time to time it will keep its momentum. That being said, a pm with eligible members would be helpful, and I'm going to try to bring this thread up whenever I can. I've also been PMing new members here and there, hopefully I won't be too much of a pest...they're not obligated to ANSWER if they don't want, but at least it's out there.

Also I have to remember that not everybody whiles away their workday on VB the way I do <blushes>. It might be many days or even weeks before your newbie of choice pops back in.

And this is a great idea and worth keeping up so don't lose heart.

Pasta>Cruelty 06-15-2005 02:15 PM

nixona, can I adopt you?

mommyof1 06-15-2005 03:20 PM

I don't know to much about the vegetarian nutrition issues in which you seemed to be interested, but I'll send you a PM about the site if you like. Would you like the PM?
