Hey everyone...I'm new to this board. I'm a vegetarian without many others around so I need advice, inspiration etc. I'm hoping joining this board will help. I live in Chicago and an undergrad in college studying religion with a minor in illustration. I'm in my last year and plan on maybe going to Morocco next year for a few months.

I'm interested in spirituality, especially the mystical traditions.

I love poetry and right now read a lot of the beats and persian poets as well as others. Also just discovered Jorge Luis Borges and enjoying all his poetry and short stories.

I'm in a band called People Will Blink that a friend said sounded like They Might Giants meets David Byrne meets Philip Glass. That was a nice thing to say but I don't think we're up to that level.

I'd like to get more involved with "acitvism" especially issues with environmentalism. I'm sure many of you can point me in the right direction. If anyone knows a good organization especially in Chicago I would be interested.

I look forward to joining the discussions here and am excited to get to know all of you!

Hi Azeem;

Welcome to VB and congratulations on the move towards vegetarianism

Vegan Outreach has a stellar starter kit.

Please do not let the word "vegan" in it scare you.

The information applies just as much to vegetarians as

vegans. Just add milk and eggs if that is what you are into.

Vegan Outreach will mail you a very nice printed copy for

free. You can also download a pdf version for free or read

it on the web for free.

The kit includes unique and thoughtful essays by

Vegan Outreach founder Matt Ball that will help you

make vegetarianism a rewarding and lasting committment.

It has a better recipe section than most starter kits that

I have seen. Best of all it also has an up to date,

complete, easy to understand, and brief nutrition section by

Jack Norris, a vegan Registered Dietician.

Assuming you have a solid reason for starting veg*nism

the two best things you can do to make your commitment to it

last is to learn good nutrition and to learn to cook a small

set of recipes you really like.

Here is the url:

http://www.veganoutreach.org/starterpack

Vegan Outreach also hosts a web site of health articles

for people on plant based diets:

http://www.veganhealth.org

Be careful of who you take nutrition advice from on the web.

There are a number of web mavens who sound as if they know what

they are talking about and they really don't.

Learn to ask people how they know what they know.

Animal Rights sites, even some of the more well known names are known for

giving out of date or incomplete information on vegetarian nutrition.

If you are interested in more information I have articles and descriptions

of books by well known, well respected, and well credentialed authorities

on my web site at:

Welcome Azeem! A few of us get together for dinner in Chicago every so often, it's usually discussed first in the Illinois thread. And from what I hear there's also a very good turnout each month at the Vegan Meetup, I believe it's the first Saturday of each month at noon.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes! You seem like a very friendly group.

Yeah! It's a self portrait I drew based on Safavid period Persian art which I enjoy!

Steve, thanks for all the information and web sites. I'll look at them especially because I'm stll trying to educate myself health wise. I suppose it's a lifelong process though.

Hummusisyummus is a good substitute for your real name. I agree wholeheartedly!Michael-I'd love to meet up with fellow Vegetarians and grab a bite. I've been to Chicago Diner a few times and Soul Vegetarian but have yet to try Alice and Friends, which I hear is great. Any other good Chicago veggie places?? I'm not a vegan so I'm not sure if the vegan meetup would welcome me! Well I guess I could pretend...

Kidding of course...I think
