Talking Hi! Brand new vegetarian here! ^_^

Hi There! My name is Amanda and I made the decision to go vegetarian 11 days ago today!! So obviously I'm a total noob, but so far am really loving the way I feel, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Even though I felt like I was making ethical choices before, I realize now that there's no such thing as ethical animal products, and it's making me re-think every aspect of my life.

Not only am I totally convicted it was the right thing to do, surprisingly, my decision and conviction has also been influencing my husband to re-think his decisions as well (he's still omni but we eat veggie at home exclusively - he's very open-minded and supportive!).

Other than my sister, who lives pretty far away, I don't have any other vegetarian friends or family so I thought it would be smart to try and connect with some like-minded people

Welcome aboard Amanda!

It sounds like you've done your nutritional homework! It's great that you're doing and feeling well on a vegetarian diet.

Please humor me (an aging vegetarian) by checking out these vegetarian / vegan nutrition webpages:

For lacto-ovo vegetarian diets: https://www.vegsoc.org/eatwellplate

For vegan diets: http://www.mercyforanimals.org/files/VSG.pdf (it says "Vegetarian Starter Guide", but it's actually vegan)

Nutrients to pay attention to: http://veganhealth.org/articles/intro

.

_________

Specific recommendations for a healthy diet include: eating more fruit, vegetables, legumes, nuts and grains; cutting down on salt, sugar and fats. It is also advisable to choose unsaturated fats, instead of saturated fats and towards the elimination of trans-fatty acids."

Thank you so much, David, I definitely will check out those sites! Technically I'm lacto-ovo right now, but it's minimal, as my goal is to aim more towards a vegan diet, so I'm definitely paying attention to nutrients, knowing dairy/eggs will not be a big part of my diet I very much appreciate the pointers; the healthier I can be, the better an example I can set for the omnis in my life! ^_^

If you live near a larger city, it's fairly likely that there's a vegetarian social group near you. If you go on http://www.meetup.com, type "Vegetarian" in the "All Meetups" box, and type in your city & state, you can see whether such a group is near you. If there's no group within the default distance from you (5 miles), try selecting the 10 or 25 mile range.

Thank you! Funny, I actually did this the other day, and there are indeed a couple in the closest city to me, which is a bit of a journey as I take transit, but I'm considering joining one that doesn't require a consistent attendance ^_^

Welcome to a board filled with like minded people! If you feel like you're a newbie when it comes to things like nutrition, Becoming Vegetarian and Becoming Vegan are great resources on plant based nutrition. I look forward to seeing you post!
