New teen veggie from the UK!

Hey all,

I'm Em.

I am a newbie to vegetarianism and the Veggieboards. I have been meat and fish free for only three days. I chose to turn vegetarian as I wanted a healthier diet, and felt that I relied on meat too much. Currently the only Vegetarian specific product I have tried is Quorn Burgers.

I am the only vegetarian in my family, so "coming out" to them was a little tricky! However they support my decision. I am excited but nervous to turn vegetarian - I am sure I shall enjoy it.

Look forward to using the forum, and learning new things.

Many thanks,

Em, age 17.

It looks good to me. Are you having trouble seeing it?

Back on the board after brief 'hiatus'. Still a vegetarian and hoping to post more regularly. Having a browse I had forgot just how much of a popular forum Veggieboards is. Glad to be back

Hello MozIsMyShepherd,

I have been finding it very fulfilling. I can really embrace my 'animal lover' attitude now, and do not miss any animal products whatsoever. It is sometimes a struggle when dining out due to the rural area I live in, but it is totally worth it and I aren't going to return to being an omni ever again.

So you don't consume any animal products? That's cool you don't miss them, same here...though I do think about fish sometimes when I go passed fish and chip shop or smell someone's tuna subway. I'm sure that will too go with time.

No I am a strict vegetarian, so don't eat meat, fish, gelatin etc. Yes I agree with you, I never liked fish, however I very occasionally miss chips from the chippie (but they are cooked in beef dripping).

Just try a different fish and chip shop, they normally cook in oil, cooking chips in animal fat is not that common here, is it?

All of my local ones sadly do cook in animal fat. I aren't too concerned though, I can always cook some myself.

Hi Em. So glad to see you back at VeggieBoards.

It's a shame about the chippies because chippies are so ubiquitous but if they use beef dripping there's not a lot you can do. At least the more people ask what they're using for cooking, the more they'll realise they're missing out on potential customers. What region of the UK do you live in? I suspect this problem is worse in the North but maybe I'm just a paranoid Northener?!

Leedsveg I think you may be right, I lived in the south for 5 years and now in London, most fish and chip shops I've used cook with veg oil

My usual answer: I have never heard a convincing reason to eat meat.

Yes I am from the North. It's rural and sadly I don't think it will change anytime soon, but there is hope if we keep asking
