Hey! My name's Katie, but there are an awful lot of those in the world, so I generally go by quix. I've taken the long, round-about road to becoming vegan, but I think I've finally figured out what works for me.
I first went vegetarian in college. I was taking a nutrition class with an environmental component to it, and I learned about how horrible meat consumption is for the environment. I avoided meat for a year before I entered my first relationship and started eating meat again so I would be more welcome in his house. I'm furious with my younger self now.
Last year, I was writing a book about a vegetarian character, and while I was doing research on her, I stumbled across a PETA video about how they treat dairy cows. I was disgusted, and since then I've been working to transition to vegan. I've done well with being a vegetarian, but the vegan was harder for me because I was relying too much on processed foods.
Now I'm a week into a vegan cleanse, and I'm enjoying it. I have two more weeks on the cleanse, and I'm hoping this is enough to jump-start my new vegan lifestyle. I'm eating more fruits and vegetables than ever before, and I'm learning a lot more about healthy living. I've decided to try not to be too hard on my former self. It may have taken me a while to come around to being a vegan, but I'm here now, and that's what matters. :)
Hi Quix! Congrats on your new status!
Don't beat yourself up about the past. It took me 10-years just to transition to vegetarianism, then another 5-years to go vegan. This all started in about 1981. Life is a journey!
Welcome to VB!
