I forgot to mention Chris Rock earlier. I think Chapelle has passed him up, but Bigger and Blacker is still one of the funniest shows I ever saw.

True story, I actually worked with Richard Pryor Jr. back in Peoria. I believe Michael may have worked with him too for a short period. I really couldn't figure him out he was a real nice guy, a minister and was just getting married. He disliked his father very much, but had no qualms about going to stay in Richard's home in HI for his honeymoon. Other than that he was an average Joe.

Jim Gaffigan is on That 70's Show! He runs the restaurant that Hyde, Kelso, and (now) Forman work at.

It sounds like you're talking about Brian Posehn who plays Kevin the mail clerk on Just Shoot Me. A girl at work calls me "Kevin" because sometimes (when I'm hungover) I talk like him. He was on HBO's Mr. Show, too. His bio by them is hilarious: http://www.bobanddavid.com/mrshow_ar...es/posehn.html

Max - Yup, that was him! He's soo funny

And LadyF - I think who you're thinking of is actually David Cross, who is also extremely funny and was on Mr.Show.

You know, I'm a big fan of the Bob and David stuff, but neither of them impress me in stand-up form...

Many of my favorites have already been mentioned.

Bill Hicks Not a lot of people have heard of him because he died from cancer before he really hit it big. He shocks me and makes me laugh so damn hard. Also makes me think which is something not a lot of comedians can do.

Also, Eddie Izzard, Ellen Degeneres, Richard Pryor, and Chris Rock (especially his first HBO special).

I judge a comedian by a simple criteria. If I can sit down and watch one of their bits for the 50th time and laugh like it's the first time I've seen it, I know they're good. Every time I watch Eddie Izzard I laugh until my sides ache. My boyfriend then asks me "haven't you see this a hundred times?" and I gasp "yes!!".

I can't remember what comedian said this but it's one of the funniest lines I've ever heard.

The comedian was referring to some action hero from the old days whose super hero claim was that he had the strength of ten men. "So why didn't 11 guys get together and beat the crap out of him?".

I don't know why that makes me laugh but it does. Even now.

I'm surprised no one mentioned Nick Swardson. He has a couple stand-ups acts that Comedy Central airs a lot (or used to). He does a funny bit about how old people are going to listen to rap in 50 years.

http://www.loyno.edu/~jjdinsmo/swardson_home.htm

And I love Will Ferrell.

Too many!

Lee Evans, David Baddiel, Rob Newman, Steve Coogan, Bill Hicks, Rik Mayall and the whole Comic Strip/Young Ones/Bottom gang. I also like Harry Hill, though no one else seems to understand why. These people never fail to make me laugh until my sides hurt.

My favourite comedy series is Spaced, written by Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson (I think that's her name?). I've seen bits and pieces of them live, and I'd love to see more.

Oh, so many are springing to mind. . . the Fast Show team, Avid Merrion (bo selecta), Ali G, the bald guy on Little Britain, and if you want to talk comedy shows I could be here all day. Red Dwarf, Filthy, Rich and Catflap, Vicar of Dibley . . .

Hehe, my bf and I collect comedy videos.

I have to say that I've never heard of many of the comedians mentioned in this thread, so it looks like I have some checking out to do

ETA:

sorry, I thought of some more, and couldn't leave them out . . .

James Dreyfus in Gimme, Gimme, Gimme and the Thin Blue Line

Kathy Burke in every comedy she's done

Rowan Atkinson

the Mary Whitehouse Experience team

the earlier Harry Enfield stuff

I heard a CD-recorded live performance of Brian Regan when I was in Spain, and I laughed so hard. Much better than Jeff Foxworthy, IMO. Regan is genuinely funny without being crude, lewd, or using profanity. It CAN be done!

I'm not really up on comedians these days, but here goes:

Eddie Izzard (Tea and cake or Death!)

Bill Maher

Ellen Degeneres

Paula Poundstone used to crack me up. I hope she gets back to doing standup.

I'm in love with Sabrina Matthews ("Yes it is counterintuitive, it's also weird, or ****ed up"). Any stand up artist who does not end sentences with prepositions and still remains funny deserves a million bucks. I also adore Eddie Izzard, Mitch Hedberg, and Steven Lynch.

Ellen DeGeneres, Bernie Mac, Dave Chapelle, Chris Rock and George Lopez cracks me up too.

Foreign: Rowan Atkinson, Ardal O'Hanlon, Graham Norton. I've unfortunately never had the pleasure of seeing a full Graham standup show but his talk shows rock
