I've bagged a freecycled piano! But what next?

I know music theory etc from playing the guitar for years, already know a few basic chords/runs on the piano but get bored reading Mel Bay-type lessons.

Not interested in becoming a sight reader or just playing songs from sheet music but would like to improve my piano vocabulary.

Any ideas? What works for you?

what about fake books?

They have the melody plus the chords. If you have a chord books too you could make work. Play the chord with the left hand and the melody with the right.

I can sight read a bit, but I sometimes use a fake book. I've got some fake Beatles books.

Fake books are call that because the musician using it, fakes it. Or so I am told.

ETA: here's a Beatles fake book on Amazon

make your fist into a ball and roll it over a set of three black keys and bump the next black key with your pinky twice. Roll your fist back down the same three keys and bump the next key over with your thumb knuckle twice. It's a classic.

but the books are a super idea.

and there are videos on youtube of people giving lessons on piano too so that should be easy

I really, really want Sevenseas to respond to this thread.

MrFalafel, I wish I could read music. I am a vocalist and love singing and performing, but feel like a whole new world would open up to me if I could read music. I'll watch this thread with great interest.

Why?

But I was going to suggest that you could print little images of all the celebrities or other people you hate and glue them to the keys, and then you can pound the keys with rusty nails to learn technique while venting anger. For effect, you could put tomato sauce on the keys, under the images, so that after a solo performance, you will have simulated some bloody mayhem in Hollywood.

Here you are in a few years, knocking it out at the jazz club.

Not take lessons from an evil Russian piano teacher who hits your little fingers with a ruler whenever you hit a wrong note.

I've always found the best way to play any instrument is to get drunk first. It always sounds great!

This is how I play piano, never had a lesson in my life but it sounds fine.

By the way I've never heard of fake books, I just use guitar songbooks because they have chords and melodies.

In fact, the two best songbooks I own are "fake books" and I never even realised!

These aren't cheap, but they're worth every penny.

You'll also need a keyboard chord chart - best to get something that is basically a pamphlet so it has all the chords you'll need on one page and you can stick it in front of you when you're playing.

I've got a great one which cost the princely sum of £1.95. Next time you're in Charing Cross Road, check out some of the music shops or Foyles, they're bound to have something.

The sort of thing I mean will be something like this:
