My mom and 13 yr old sister are really into movies about haunted houses/ghosts. Can you guys give me some movie recommendations on some good scary movies with ghosts/hauntings? It seems most "scary movies" now have a lot of torture/gore scenes. I've also found that some movies that seem to be about hauntings only turn out to be the main character's repressed memories of some awful/disturbing childhood rape/molestation. Thats so NOT what I am looking for and would ever want to watch. Movies like Poltergiest, Aminityville Horror, The Orphanage, The Others, etc are what I'm interested in.

Here is a haunted house/ghost story which is rated PG-13 and which I liked:

What Lies Beneath (2000). Starring Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer.

"and I stand

upon a mountain

made of weak and useless men"

I liked House on Haunted Hill (1999)

A millionaire offers a group of diverse people $1,000,000 to spend the night in a haunted house with a horrifying past

"The Haunting" was a 12 certificate here and was proper scary! My Dad scoffed when he saw the certification but took it back when he saw the movie...

I love, love, love what lies beneath. And house on haunted hill was actually really good too. I'm sure you've seen the Sixth Sense, but if not, it's worth a look.

Thanks guys. We recently watched What Lies Beneath , definetly a good movie. Also seen Sixth Sense, House on Haunted Hill, all pretty good. I saw A Haunting a long time ago but totally forgot about that one. Thanks!

I thought Ghost Ship (from 2002, with Gabriel Byrne and Julianna Margulies) was nice and creepy, although it looks like some people who posted on Amazon didn't like it. You can rent it and make up your own mind.

You should watch The Changeling. And the ORIGINAL The Haunting (I don't like remakes). And The Legend of Hell House (its got some nudity, but I was younger than thirteen the first time I saw it).

I saw Shutter last month. Its a creepy ghost story with no gore.

Beatlejuice and Ghostbusters 1 and 2 are good, though they arent very scary. Discoverys A Haunting In... installments are interesting. Does Ringu count? There's all the old black and white ghost movies out there that she might enjoy checking out. The only name that springs to mind is House on Haunted Hill (the original) with Vincent Price.

I like "13 Ghosts." It's got Tony Shalhoub and Matthew Lillard in it. Sometimes it's called "Thir13een Ghosts" or something lame like that. It's cheesy, I love it.

Fun movie. But for god's sake avoid the remake, make sure it's the 1980 version!!

I thought that The Others was an under-rated ghost story.
